"Wagging" is a tool and must be used in the proper context to be effective. Is it a final marks kinda thing? No, but it speeds up the search. Your receiver doesn't care if it is hanging plum... it'll sense EM radiation at a 45* angle just as well as from a 73*, or 90*. Point and shoot, real simple-like.

By rounding your swing at each end, and angling the end of your receiver upwards, you are covering more ground with each sweep. Manual sensitivity adjustment is needed depending on equip. You can pick up a line across the yard this way. Check out the seektech demo vids on youtube.

"Proper Locating" Ultimately it doesn't matter if you're sweep is super accurate, as long as you find your tone you can then move on to pinpointing your signal. And you won't always be able to do that with a plum reciever held perpendicular to the ground.

So your signal is being masked by a shallow conductor? Step off 20' to the side and sweep sideways radially to get a peak on it... you could even measure the angle of the receiver, do a little trig, and plot a line location this way.

Do huh? That's too deep man. Measure angles? Do a little trig? F-that!
