FIBER SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! Costs alot to produce, carries a ton of vital information, costs a TON to fix!!!!!!! Yet NO ONE WHO PUTS THE SHIT IN THE GROUND has figured out that a $50 dollar roll of 8 to 10 guage wire WILL SOLVE A SHITLOAD OF PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's even worse is tracer tape over any facility. A contractor cuts the tape and then 1. your f#@ked 2. dig it up and pray it is not cut somewhere else.

The tape is placed about 1.5' under grade in florida.

cast iron gas mains are the hardest in any situation but/and......fiber is hard in a congested area with other deep or shallow utilities

Old primaries with the concentric neutral that are not coated or not sheathed It seems when it deteriorates you are screwed. Of course the same thing can be said about any thin type tracer wire. In the future it's going to be Verizon's fiber with their Mule Tape with the small stip of bare wire in it.

The tracer wire in the mule tape, most don't understand that it needs to be grounded for the locator to trace it correctly.

Inserted gas services have to be the worst.
What is the answer for a bare steel service with inadequate cathodic protection suffering from corrosion? Why, insert it with a completly untonable polyethelyne material so there is no chance to find it at all in 5 years or so, of course!
I seek not to know the answers, but to understand the questions.

But it has that nice steel jacket around it that is sure to ward off every backhoe or trencher...... I told someone the other day what we do (locate underground lines). His reply: Wow, do they lose them that often? Hmmmm...........

Please tell me it was not someone in the industry that said that. Had to be a homeowner!

Yep, it was a homey. The same homey that swears the gas line you are locating is his water line - you know the story: "I've been living here for 30 years. I saw them put it in!". Then you pothole and show him the yellow pipe and he's like, "Oh yeah, that's right. The water line is over there......."

Another minute in the life of an educator - oooops, I mean locator......

OVUS, your tag says "Nasty Old Owner." Do you still the opportunity to go out and locate?
