1) Never paint a private driveway or hardscapes, unless it will be replaced during excavation...

Always leave a few paintmarks in subtle locations where they can provide help to the next locator to come along.

Sometimes print off copies of locate report for the benefit of myself or others when I KNOW someone will be going back to locate/refresh the area.
Saves them and myself lots of time not having to figure out all the locate hookup points.
Of course, I am VERY selective about whose locate information I trust.

"Hard Marks" are our friends.

Just have to be neat and subtle about it.

We videotape all markouts, but the paint in subtle locations to help the next guy is proper etiquette.

How about queue at emergency mark outs- do you always let gas locator go first when they are on site at the same time as you??

i think it is just good manners to let first come-first mark!!!!! if i had a choice yes let him go first.....

What sucks is losing a key contract, and suddenly only marking one utility. That sucks

When locating at a new home under construction for a shady contractor. Always paint under the wood pile and cover it up with lumber so it can not be seen. So when contractor damages facility and destroys marks he will not see paint under lumber pile. Perfect for when the quality department loses your pictures you took of the area after your locate!!!

I started painting the date on a LOT of my markouts for all those jobs that don't start for 6-8 months. (like non 911 gas leaks)

Anybody let excavators know if they 1) Had a difficult time on the locate, so dig carefully or 2) The primary seems to be VERY shallow- break out the teaspoons...

On occasion I have labelled or painted various grounds in a telephone pedestal to indicate where each line runs.

When I have nubees working in my area, can then tell them to "look for the line painted______ (ie: green). Thats the line you need to connect to."
Or look for the tag marked _______ (ie:south).
