DO you look at the screen listen to the sound or both. I was locating about a mile of fiber today and got about 1/2 way done and realized I hadn t looked at my screen since the first 50 ft. But I am sure on shorter locates I look at the screen more

With the metrotech 810 I mostly listened and checked the dial indicator every so many feet on a long run. Short runs I did both pretty constantly. The value of a good audio indicator is safety, less likely to walk into something.
With the ViVax I find I have to mostly look at the screen and have walked into so many things I always wear my hardhat.
With the 8000 I find myself watching the screen more. I learned with the 400 and was taught it was better, safer and faster to listen.
I might not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was !
It's better to be Pissed Off than Pissed On or Stood On and Pissed Off Of !

I'm an 810 guy and listen mostly. I listen and every now and then glance down at the needle or signal strength. Mostly listen though. I should of prefaced that with "as long as its a machine I can trust", but that should be understood without saying.

I'm a both person I like the sound and directional indicator to line up on my locates better safe than sorry and it only takes a second to check your screen.
I pretty much listen only. It drives me nuts when I'm in a construction site and all the heavy equiptment is so loud I have to look.
I look and listen in the beginning but by the end I'm mostly listening. The last 5 feet I will do both.
"Change does not always equal progress."
I do both with the RD 7000. From start to finish.
I do both as well... start to finish...
I started locating with a Subsite and mostly went by sound when I was confident I was on my target... Now I use an 8000 and I 30-40 percent look at the screen with sound now during a typical locate...
Depends on the Equipment & experience. RD always listen, only time i looked at screen was to make sure freq's were the same or depth reading. viaVax looked at screen more then sound. Metrotec Sound got me close but trusted the screen more .
i prefer the sound. this way i can look ahead and concentrate of not stepping into a hole or something. I start with gain high on my sweep. When I find the cable i want I lower the gain until just a beep when I go over it. The 7000 doesn't have as loud a speaker as the 4000. I too have trouble in high traffic areas. i bought that ear amplifier advertised on TV. It was $4.99 at Menards so going to try it when i get near traffic
For me its both. I listen for peak, but use the information on the screen to check for drops in signal strength, depth changes or distortion that might indicate I jumped onto another conductor.
I seek not to know the answers, but to understand the questions.
