I get quite a few calls for locating plastic water lines; usually service feeds, small diameter lines. If they go out to a drilled well or spring with a pump then I just locate the pump electric, no problem. But homeowners, contractors, even engineers are asking to have plastic lines located. We run a GPR unit and I haven't really attempted to find a 1" plastic line at 5'-6' deep but I hear the chances are pretty bleak for being able to "see" it.

Anyone have any experience with other methods of locating plastic water lines, besides witching sticks?? I have seen there are several products on the market and wondering if anyone has any experience or thoughts on the equipment:

    1) knocker/thumper - Sewerin makes one I believe
    2) wave pulse generator
    3) Sensit Ultra-Trac Acoustic Pipe Locator - uses sound waves
    4) AML Peo-Series PVC locator - uses high-frequency radio waves
    5) Jameson traceable rodder for live pipes

You live in one of the best states for using GPR and already have one so that is your best bet.
1)knocker thumper- works ok need quiet for best results.
2)I have never used wave pulse but would try it on larger city jobs.
    3)sensit- never tried one
4)AML-Own one they are really just a joke tool
5)traceable rodder- have one they work great if no turns to make it past.

Thanks Cuda. One of the drillers from our sister company has been dowsing his borings for years. May have to have him take some calls on the side!

In case it hasn't been mentioned, the RD500 is an effective tool.
