Gas Service under Driveway??

Hooked up to the Gas Service today at my house to get a feel for my equipment. I used the tracer Wire and got a great signal. I traced it out to the parkway in front of my house and decided to see if the neighbors service came over. I followed the signal from my side of the street into the street and right up the middle of the neighbors driveway.

I only went half way up and didn't want to spend anymore time on his property. I did check left and right of the signal to see if I picked anything else up and nothing. I shot a depth and current and it was the same as on my side of the street. The foot prints in the snow were as stright as an arrow from access point on my house, right up the neighbors driveway.

Is it normal for a gas line to run up the middle of a driveway?

Yep, Gas services could run almost anywhere. Especially if your Gas company is anything like Nicor here. I have seen gas service wrap around a house before going out to a short side main. Just do everything properly and trust your equipment.

If there is an add-on to the house, it could run under it. i run into those now and then.

No add on Cablevine and the sub division is about 5 years old. The sub Division is an add on to an older Sub.

I have 2 houses in my area that the gas service from the house, and the house next door runs under the driveway of house #1. leave it to nicor... LoL

In my new areas gas and electric are normally installed prior to driveways, sidewalks , etc. About 1/2 run diagonally under driveways from the easement to the other side of the house. The contractors usually go the shortest distance possible.

yes this is normal because as Spray said most gas lines are buried before the driveways are put down.....as was said CTDON.....expect the unexpected!!!!!

USMCSS:

I have a house in my area (brand new subdivision multi million dollar homes on 2 acres of land each) where the gas service from the target house paralleled the lot line about 5 feet inside the neighbours lot.

It got hit THREE times (inside one year) and I went to all three blowing gas emergencies. After the third hit the gas company sarted thinking that maybe they should move the service so it would be inside the target houses property. Took them many many months to actually get the job done.

So, the gas can run almost anywhere, even, very occasionally, outside the target houses lot line.

I am seeing quite a number of NEW subdivisions today where the gas service comes off the side of the house runs forward, paralleling the house. Just past the front of the home, it does a 45 degree turn and runs forward toward the gas main.

Expect the unexpected in this business and as was said earlier, get to know and trust your machine. Treat it with care, like you did your weapon and it will reward you with good service.

Can't stress enough (Never assume with Gas). These services can and will do almost everything that you would not expect. I have a rule of thumb now, that on every locate I hookup to most of the surrounding services just to see where they go. (if time permits, of course)

Get to know your area good and hook up to as much as you can, so your database in your head builds up.
