    Red face Frozen Vaults

Any good tips/tricks to get fiber vaults with frozen lids open? I am not crazy about weed burners, started a pretty decent fire once.

Those fiberglass and concrete ones? I tried hitting them with a heavy hammer and that only breaks them up so don't try that.

I used a manhole cover lifter and that usually did it. But some times the little lift bar embedded into the cover pulled right out. My job was to open it and repairs I leaves to the people that do that. https://pksafety.com/allegro-manhole...MaAssaEALw_wcB

That's the bad news Pro. I'm the guy that has to fix them. We have a job fixing tracer wires and locate points. We are also replacing all the broken lids.

So sorry OB. Im gulity of it too. Frozen lids anger me. Usually just needs a lid replaced. I Never damage the tracer wire though as that would affect me personally. My empathy level always rises when it's me.

Daman1 yeah I've broke plenty too. The tracer repair is separate from the broken lids. The company that owns the fiber us to do maintenance on they're system. The tracers are from locators getting in the vaults, cutting the tracer and not wire nut it back. They gave us a big list of little stuff they want done. It is mostly winter busy work for me.

The same type of person who does that to you leaves pedestals unbonded. A lazy practice that costs you more next time. If you catch a guy not reconnecting tracers and he mysteriously disappears, I won't ask any questions.... just saying.......

I use these tools every cold, winter day with success. Even though it costs more for a 3-lb hammer with the rubber grip, I feel I can really put a large amount of my body weight into the swing without the threat of slippage. I swing the 3-lb high above my head for a good wacking. After my wack job, I use the pry bar to pry on the butt-end of any fiberglass handhole lid. This seems to work for me the vast majority of times busting the frozen seal.

If I must walk away from a frozen handhole or manhole that won't budge, I go to the next lid down the line for access. Any laterals needing marked leaving the frozen lid, I go to the out-end and bring it back.

It's 68 degrees here, you are not the only one who is suffering.
