Them were the days. When you'd see another locator you wanted to talk to without others hearing we'd hold our hands out the window holding up 6 fingers which meant to goto channel six which was just a short range channel so no unwanted ears heard where or what we were doing.

View finders and Micro Phish. Paper Tickets w/ a piece of gragh paper so you could draw out the locate, including measurements. Saturday morning breakfast meetings at the local Waffle House where experienced locators talked business and newby's began to learn their craft. Supervisors didn't have to deal with quality issues because locators took such pride in their areas that if some yahoo did a locate in their area that resulted in an at-fault damage, that individual was met out behind the shop and staighten out or moved on.........yeh, those were good times.

Oh the memory of paper tickets. You had to go to the shop every morning to get your tickets and you'd judge your day the way your tickets were handed to you.

If there was a paper clip it was going to be a good day.

If there was one of those black clips you were going to have to work pretty hard.

If there was a rubberband holding your tickets you expected to work till dark.

I really miss working with the fellow that mentored me. We got along great and he was a superb "Team Leader". At times, he used a velvet hammer to get a message across but his values did not allow him to have team members who didn't give a lot of themselves. In return though, he really came through for us when it came time for coffee and donuts...just kidding... for raises and promotions. I cannot believe how much I learned from him in such a short time.
They often gave me some of the tougher locates in the older rural areas and he was always available to come over and help me out of a jam.

Unfortunately, he and the big boss did not always see eye to eye so he left. A real crying shame...a HUGE amount of talent went out the door.

No body ever took me out back though, or should I say YET, but there is a first time for everything I guess. And, I am still at the same company so I must be a half fast locator, er... I mean half assed locator.
