They use these a lot in Pittsburgh. I heard about 'em first from a contractor, and though he was lying... But then I looked into it. The Locators who use these give the contractor multiple marks.
Example: "It could be HERE (Puts mark on ground), or HERE (puts mark 4' over from original) or HERE (and so on).
Some patient contractors, right thar.
Hey now.... I've used divining rods.... they are usually pretty accurate... they will tell you something is down there... you just don't know what.... all it takes is to strip the flag off a couple of flags and bend a 90 in them and there ya have it... cheaper than 25 bucks...
I've never seen anyone do it but everyone says that they have so I don't know. I just don't get the physics of it. What is being emmitted from underground that these sticks are picking up and how do they do it. Sound vibrations maybe?
I had a broken tracer wire and bent some flags out and dotted it out using them,. Went off measurements and was right where i had dotted it out. The crew dugg on those dots and found the 2" service. I believe it is based of the disturbance of ground and the effect on the magnetic field
I have used the bent flag method for locating since I have left the locating field. I think I was the only one that left my company that didn't take a transmitter and receiver. LOL
I used the flag method a while back when digging a footing for an addition on a house. The electric was marked out over the CATV cable(utiliqest). After hand digging for 15 mins I grabbed a flag, bent it 90 degrees and found electric service nine feet away and had it exposed in probably 5 mins.
My coworkers looked like they saw fire for the first time!

That thing looks like a radio anntenne on a bicycle handle. In some areas I locate here that thing would be spinning in circles.
Whoa, old thread but hahahaha $25 for an old tv antennae. I'm cracking up.
I've used a witching rod for many years with great success. Just use a flag rod or piece of wire. Always fun to show it to someone who has never seen it done before.
a few years ago i was asked to locate a 300mm water main at an airport, when i arrived there was this old farmer type using his divining rods, so i went over to introduce myself and asked about his method of witch craft, he told me exactly where he thought the main was, great i thought my work here is done, but i still pulled out my GPR just incase his voodoo skills were'nt working perticularly well that morning. my first pass found the main clear as a bell, so i marked it out and with depths, then double checked with my rd4000, the old boy promtly came over and asked what i was doing with a lawnmower "you aint gonna find water with that" ?
well i said im afraid your jedi skills have foresaken you, here is the main.
he was adement he was correct.
untill the digger team started excavating the main on my mark and bingo there she was!
so he got back in his old landrover with his sheep dog and buggered off
20 mins later he came back and said" i know what the problem is there boy, i must ave found a lay line"
after id regained my composure i had to agree with him "BLOODY LAYLINES"
HAAAAAAAAAAA
ps i dont doubt that the art of divining is rubbish, but from what i gather some people either have it or NOT !
In the days where I used to locate LP steel gas services in old neighborhoods, and there was no way to enter a vacant home to hook up to the interior meter, you do two things: 1) mark the water service w/ some blue paint, and 2) use my witching rod to mark the gas service, by process of elimination. I was only wrong twice.
