@ Classof1993 : ComEd is one of the big-name electric companies in Northern Illinois. USIC has been doing their locates since the UTI days (pre-SM&P). It would definitely be interesting to see who got the contract... I haven't heard anything yet. Maybe they're pulling it back in-house???

Damn those rumors! Wait till tomorrow & we'll all know for sure!

Well, I guess this could be the start, some companies have found it more cost effective to keep it in house.

Comed is the Illinois branch of Exelon's power transmission companies, they operate under PECO in Pennsylvania, and I believe under BGE in Maryland. Power transmission is a small part of the company however, their money is made in power generation for the most part. In Illinois they have been under some real pressure to stop subcontracting a lot of the work that should be done in house, so I would not be overly surprised if this is true, but I still have doubts to it's veracity.

The last I heard the contract was out to bid, which is not uncommon for the utility to do especially when one company has held the contract for so long, but USIC was invited to put their bid in as well. So yes, it might change hands... or not.

frosty, saw our mutual friend a week or so ago, he confirms this... and mentioned the name of one of our former employers as being a bidder. In all, he pretty much said what you just did. In addition - locates will definitely not be coming back "in-house" because they're done w/ that game.

It would be golden if we lose the comed contract. No more need for coc locates. Rookies can go on the calls then. And the new company would have the pleasure of locating comeds garbage and the process it involves.

It is never cost effective to perform locates in house. They have to pay union wages, overtime, standby time, this time, that time ect... Unlike the contract locating firms. Plus, they have to pay to repair damages caused by their own locators mis-marks. The largest percentage of expenses is wages, for the utility owners, and the contract locators. The utility company does not pay the locators wages, his wages come from the contract locating company. They make their money of the backs of the locators.
