I have a friend who works for this company. And you are right, it all depends on the district manager and supervisor. The locators job is easy and fun, no matter what part of the country you are in. It is always the people running it that make things complicated. When you say the word "CLS", I get diarrhea because of the pressures and tensions the supervisors unnecessarily create.
But just to warn you, I heard they have GPS on all their vehicles and you HAVE to call your supervisor twice a day no matter what. If your translore (yes they use translore) does not match up with your clears(even though you know it's clear) they start calling you up to do a drive along and start warning you with threats of losing your job. They audit your ass if you go too fast. This is a nightmare for experienced locators who know what they are doing when they clear tickets. You basically work with your hands tied. Too much time is wasted policing employees instead of locating and fullfilling the contracts in my opinion. They only locate in the tri state area and are fairly new to the locating industry. They are super slow in the winter, and by the looks of it, they won't be going far if they operate like this.
If you can handle this type of atmosphere, then go for it.
I don't like to be calling people every day for nonsense (I only call for flags and paint) and I sure hate when the supervisors call to ask me where I am.
The new vehicles are unsafe 2008 Chevy HHR's without rear windows (an accident waiting to happen)and hubcaps on wheels for the locators (backbone of the business gets the shitty equipment). In my opinion, the old Colorado pickups are better and safer.

The lazy coffee drinking supervisors get the ones with full power aluminum rims and rear windows. (the best equipment and vehicles)

My advice is to stay away from that company. Unless you love to work with the phone constantly ringing next to you. And, if you love tailgate meetings and a man always wanting to ride along you and watch your every move with the added fear of getting fired if you wake up late or move your car on the weekend(they'llknow on Monday).

I don't like cameras and GPS tracking. It makes our jobs more stressful to have people monitoring your every move.

It defeats the purpose of being a locator in the first place. (the sense of freedom from factories, and brick and mortar businesses)

Hope this little bit of information helps answer your question or clears things up about ECSM.

ECSM lost Verizon a couple of years back in Central and UpState NY, actually were ask to never bid again. Now they primaily do stray voltage work for National Grid in the service areas for NG. There was a rumor they were working on Fort Drum in Watertown but that hasn't been validated. They are out of Carlisle, PA and when CLS lost NJ as a whole ECSM, Premier and Utiliquest sucked up all of the scraps.
I know more and names of persons who work there to stay away from but I'm not going to post it here.

when i talked to sum sups on fri they said they had over 1000 tickets between drops, projects and fttp/fios that got called in fri afternoon. over the weekend ecsm had people from penn, del, and i think nj from what some other techs told me trying to get ticket loads down so i dont know. if verizon doesnt put them out with damages then the va scc will send them a nice litte bill.

ECSM hasn't even started in North VA, so they couldn't of lost it yet. And anybody who has been in the business long enough knows thats start-ups can be rough no matter what company it is. And yes , I do work for ECSM, but the same goes for all the other companies.
