    Default New To CableVine

    Hello all,

I am a new member on here. I came across the site about a year ago but just recently signed up. Hopefully I'll be able to learn some new stuff and maybe share some info I've gained as well. Currently I am employed as an engineer for a utility company and also do all of the locating. Our town is about 187 square miles and I locate all the electric, gas, steam, and water all by my lonesome self. During the off season I do our companies utility and infrastructure design on CAD. We also own a power plant so there is never a shortage of work to do there and sometimes an occasional locate which really sucks (worse than inside substations). Anyways, just wanted to say HI!

    Thanks!

Greetings jabajo! I welcome your membership to The Cable Vine! I was born and raised in southern Minnesota (Fairmont), spent middle school and high school in northern Iowa (near Spencer) and went to college in Mankato, Minnesota. It took me a while to learn having frozen fingers and toes 6 months a year wasn't fun. In my own opinion, it takes a special person, as yourself, to live year 'round above/near the Artic Circle. The first October snow that sticks to the ground in Hibbing doesn't melt away until some time in May.... Brrrrrrrr, just sayin'.

I thought I lived much closer to the Banana Belt when I moved south of Iowa but I just had 12" of snow accompanied with barely sub-zero temperatures this week in Kansas City...... I say Brrrrrrrr, again! Heck, schools closed here for 4 days this week, underground excavation stopped here for 4 days and I took 4 days off for vacation...... Tsk, tsk!

Kansas City Snow - Wednesday, 5 February 2014

I kinda, sorta know what challenges you face during the winter months because I also locate electric, gas, water (no steam lines, yet!) along with telephone, CATV, cross-country fibers, local school fibers, sanitary lines, storm lines, street lights and traffic signal fibers in my area that can be buried under INCHES of snow. I can't imagine finding water meters that are buried under many FEET of snow!

Anyway, thanks for finally joining our forum and please post often!

Looking forward to picking your brain. I do a lot of private locating at industrial sites and power plants(what a nightmare) and I also do GIS/CAD work. Do you use AutoCad?
Anywho, glad to have you aboard.

Yes. In fact every second I'm not locating I'm usually on AutoCAD. However I haven't dabbled much with GIS, although our city engineers do use it but I'm not sure how good they're at it.
