I was thinking that if I wanted to spend a week in the bathroom, I would stay here and eat contaminated tomatoes.

    Powersweep:

PM me with a few more details.
    How many people?
Looking for all inclusive resort or just a hotel stay?
I assume a beach destination? East coast beaches are white sand west are gold sand beahes - preference?
From Chicago east coast would be cheaper MAYBE
    Where have you travelled before?
What are you looking to do on a vacation - besides drink beer, get drunk, fall down...
Success is a journey, not a destination...

Stay out of Laredo, ElPaso and any other large border towns. This is where the drug wars are taking place.

As said above stay away from border towns. You might get shot.

Playa del Carmen is very nice, like a Cancun for middle aged folks. 5th avenue is the place to be for shopping, eating and everything else. I wandered the side streets of playa after 10:00pm, far away from the tourist area, and I felt safe. Got a tattoo on 30th (Evils). There have been a few shootings on 5th recently, but if your not a drug dealer, you'll be fine. You really can't go more than a block on 5th without a vendor asking if you wanna buy some blow or smoke. I don't know about you, but I don't wanna be caught with blow in Mexico. and its shit weed down there anyway. Well there was this one time...

Never let anyone bring you an open drink. Never leave an open drink at the bar. Be smart, be polite and you will be fine. Do not get extremely intoxicated in public. If you catch the ferry over to Cozumel, make sure to visit "the green room". It's a cigar bar but you can also get services from the ladies that hang there. Don't bring your wife to the green room.

Don't trust anyone. Period. and if you stay at an all inclusive place, tip everyone. It pays. I tipped my bartender at an AI 5 bucks each time I went and he had a fresh 1800 margarita in front of me before mine was half empty.

Mexico is what you make of it. I started going in the early 90's (Cancun), been hooked ever since.

Greetings Mark! I can appreciate your fondness of Mexico. To me, Mexico is a dangerous 'Shithole' I have no desire to visit.

Many years ago, while I attended college, I befriended many ex-military fellas employing their G.I. Bill college benefit. The ex-Marines from Camp Pendleton and ex-sailors from Naval Base San Diego all had stories on their visits to Mexico border town bars.

The one story that stayed with me was from an ex-Marine. He visited a Tijuana bar that had one of the girls inside being the most beautiful señorita he had ever seen. This Marine went on & on about this girl's beauty. Then the show began when this beautiful señorita laid on her back on this unique table set-up. From a side door a Shetland pony was led to the table, and it doesn't take much imagination to figure what happened next. The Marine said that not only was his heart crushed, but that image will stay with him his whole life. This puts a new spin on "Dog and Pony Show."

TJ was a trip. Went down there like 20 years ago with the family. I got offered several sisters by guys. They were guys eyeing the hell out of my 8-10 year old niece. My brother in law had to pick her up and carry her out of a store when she was going to get in a fight with a local girl over a doll. Those open sewers smell bad in the summer. The only road paved in a small town was to the carona distributor. In Japan there was a dancer with a big albino boa. Had the banana lady, she could slice a banana. Told us she could squeeze us so tight we would cry. There was one that had one of those mask with large nose on it. Stripper do not like when you heat up a peso and put them on a bottle for them to pick up. I did hear of those donkey show but never entered to check them out.

    Cool Re: Mexico

Just returned from another kick ass trip to Playa Del Carmen. What a wonderful shithole! Had the best trip ever and got a few new tats from my buddy. Great people, good food and drinks... it’s not for everyone tho. I toured the city and it’s just as safe as ever. The ignorant idiots that listen and believe the media might want to stay away tho... It’s busy enough down there already! . Can’t wait to return next year!

Greetings Mark! Buddy, you make me laugh! Shithole............................

Playa del Carmen does look like a neat place to visit for the fearless soul. This is what the internet sez about your Mexican oasis:

Playa del Carmen is just remote enough that the beach – really the only one there is – doesn't have a proper name. Still, it's the highlight of most vacationers' time in the area, and makes for a delightful way to spend your afternoons.

Most vacationers will have direct access to the beachfront, lounge chairs and sometimes even water sports equipment at the hotel they're staying in; the majority of the area's top resorts and hotels are stationed along this prime stretch of clean, soft sand. When you tire of lounging on the beach, busy La Quinta Avenida runs parallel to the sand, so you can walk over to explore the area's stores or restaurants. The beach is free to access, but lounge chair or equipment rentals will cost you extra.

I could be wrong, but my guess is only the foolhardy would venture much past the beach area's stores & restaurants before finding a lot of trouble................. just sayin.' Luv Ya Man!

Well, you are wrong, Wing. No offense my friend.

Like I said, it’s not for everyone. I told a gal from Canada at my resort I was going deep into the city. Her reply was - “Oh my”! Lmao... I’ve taken both my kids and a handful of girlfriends; friends to Playa. I can describe that area till I’m blue in the face, but until you get down there and meet the locals and mingle at the stores and bars and restaurants, you won’t have a clue and have to find out for yourself. Everyone I’ve been to Mexico with never felt danger anywhere and wouldn’t hesitate to return. The cartel(s) are alive and well, but they just want to move drugs and not harm anyone or extort money from any shops. Most Mexicans are half my size, lol, maybe that helps when I’m walking down the side streets at night. Many expats have retired there and live there. The real shitholes are Chicago, LA, Philadelphia, Detroit, Gary Indiana, and on and on. **** that noise...

I just feel I have to defend the city and the people I fell in love with a long time ago. Playa has a charm about it. I love it.

Have a good one Wing, love ya Man!

Ive been to El Paso, TX and spent a lot of time on the other side in Juarez. Not a resort town by any means. Its officially the murder capital of the world. A shithole for sure but the karma is way better than in most American inner cities and I've been to many. I felt more sad than afraid for the people living there. Unless youre are there for criminal reasons, you're not really on the radar. Wouldnt advise a female to get caught alone but thats true most anywhere you go.

People in resorts are assumed to be wealthy and become targets of lowlifes no matter where you go so it's not an issue confined to just Mexico. Just don't be stupid and be aware of your surroundings. Again, good advice on any vacation.

Like most of the worst places on this planet, 90% of the residents just want to live peacefully. Theres no racial component that we worry about in American cities as Mexico is full of Mexicans. Who knew, right? I think crimes against Americans get sensationalized by our media like everything else.

Maybe when I get rich I'll visit one of those big shot, fancy resort towns like Mark but if Juarez is ok, then Playa must be awesome.

And besides, where else can you bring home a suitcase full of tequilla at $1.89 a fifth USD?
