Default What safety equipment are you required to wear?

What Safety equipment are you guys required to wear in traffic and on regular locates?

And do you wear the equipment?

Have you ever heard of any locator being hit in the head in traffic?

We're required to wear hardhats anytime we're on pavement or within 20' of pavement.
I'm trying to get that changed, and any info would help.

    Thanks.

As mentioned in the past, 95% of what we do is in the oilpatch, so we have tons of safety gear.
    1. Hardhat
    2. Safety Glasses
    3. Fire retardant coveralls (NomexIII)
    4. Safety Boots
    5. 4 Gas Monitor (CH4LEL, H2S. CO,O2)
    6. Gloves
    7. SPOT GPS personal locator on remote jobs.

The funny thing is, despite nasty gases, pressurized piping systems, harsh weather and wildlife, I always feel the most uneasy doing municipal jobs where sh*thead drivers have no respect. You guys who deal with maniacs in traffic every day are in a tough environment.

Well, we are supposed to wear:
    1) Hard hat W/ 12 square inches of reflective tape visable
    2)Safety Glasses
    3)Hearing protection
    4)ANSI Class II vest
    5)Safety Boots

If we are in the lanes of traffic, we are supposed...
    6)Lane closure permit.
    7)provide the barricades and signs.
    8)Depending on the area...... Flagger.

In Low Viz situations we are also required to wear safety pants....

Thats just in traffic. We also carry an ARC Flash suit with gloves and shield, Hot stick. Rubber Gloves for touching "contaminates".

We have the Gas monitors, but are only required to have them if we are actively gaining access to a confined space........wich requires another permit, harness, radio, spotter, tri-pod w/ winch.

Just found out they are going to supply us with sun block now as well.

I recomend the safety pants...... I can't find a good picture on line, so I'll snap a picture of it myself and post........ the stuff looks rediculous.

Shorts, sleeveless Tees, flip-flops - Oh - wait - you asked what we were supposed to wear, not what we actually do wear?

Paint stick. Never go anywhere without your paint stick in your hand. Fended off many an attack from animals.

That pocket knife used to skin back insulation or scrape paint can also be a safety item, against two legged animals meaning harm. I never go anywhere without the pocket knife on me.

My buddy Rob was hit in the head last year by a passing coal truck, however I don't think a plastic hard hat would of made a difference, as the girl that was behind the truck said that the trucks speed when it passed one of those signs that gives your speed was 65 mph. Not sure what part of the truck it was that made contact, mirror possibly?

I am thinking of adding pepper spray to my inventory, some dogs are really aggressive. About once a month I have found these darn porch dogs that are under the porch or up on a deck that wait until you are well inside the yard and them come charging.

A few years ago i was walking near the shoulder of a road early morning when the home building was running wild just in time to see an oversized truck loaded with trusses and building materials. It just missed the traffic sign and i ducked i swear that thing was about to hit me in the head. I also have had people hit recap tire peices and it flew in front of me

I cant see the practical aspect of having to wear a lid for most locates. If in a construction zone, then yes of course. Otherwise, some type of yellow/orange vest/jacket..safety glasses and boots gets my vote. Proper traffic control is a must, cones etc. If entering a manhole, then a sniffer is required.
(May you live in interesting times)
