what careers can utility locating lead into?

Some guys (not many) go on to supervise drop bury crews or directional drill/bore rig crews. Most of the directional drill places won't hire you unless you have prior drilling experience already though.

Honestly, you're kind of limited on what you can move to from locating.

If you want to be a lineman go to lineman school. It's your best bet at getting a lineman gig.

If it's possibly try going to night school and getting that college education. College degree + locating experience could get you a good job with one of your local utilities, but locating experience alone probably won't help much.
