That's generally good advice but my experience with the larger 811 company is that if you make yourself more valuable they'll give you a bigger area, more work, and no raise. Give two weeks notice and you'll be turning in your truck the next morning.

I have come to figure out that locating companies like USIC and Heath don't pat locators well because they have too much over head . And will never pay what locators worth . I found a job locating job with an engineering company . Good pay , boss does not micro manage me.
Most companies will hire new people and get rid of higher paid locators to make more money . To me the bottom line is that companies would rather make money than have a good reputation . And from my experience the larger the company the worse thy are . I work rather close with a locator at USIC and I have seen his work and he is good but he tells me about the area he covers it is ridiculous . I have done work like that and it ain't good .
I started out doing locating in the late 80 ' , insert old man joke here . ....lol , and the overall way it is controlled has not changed . Most locators are dam good but most companies will not pay them what the are worth to given management better profits.
    My opinion only .

What I've noticed is states with competition, locators make more. Met a new guy fresh out of class the other day making 15 an hour and he thought that was great, said it was the best job he's ever had. He will learn soon enough that after 1.5 - 2 years he could demand 6-7 more an hour by jumping around. Contracts always changing hands and new companies need experienced guys and if your making 20$ already they need to make it worth your while to jump ship. It helps to have cut throat utility owners demanding perfection and no past dues and good luck if the locating company decides to save a few bucks and hire all newbies. They will be kicked out before they even get wireless hooked up at the office.

there is a supervisor in my company that has a high turnover rate. It is rumored that he does not like tenured techs and there might be the same feeling with higher ups in the company. Rather have noobs. Lower paid keeps the payroll down and probably bigger bonuses for meeting numbers.
