    In NJ, centerline marks are preferred up to 12" width & utility must be identified. For instance a 4" gas main would be painted "-G4-" and flagged, no arrows allowed (lots of congestion round here). If there are multiple utilities in the same trench (very common here) only 1 utility legally has to mark it if it is identified as a utility corridor and width is within tolerance. Of course, we still all try to cram our marks somewhere though, just a handy titbit to know in case of a damage......

    Tolerances for the locator's marks are 18" plus half the width of the utility. So for 4" gas above would be 18"+2"=20".
    Tolerances for the excavator to hand-dig 24" plus half the width of the utility. So for 4" gas would be 24"+2"= 26".
    That leaves a 6" slop zone for the standard corruption factor to satisfy the Jersey Way of running a State.
