I was just browsing locatorjobs.com and was curious as to how many applications were being sent out through the system. While looking at them I can read the first sentence or so of the cover letters that are being sent out with the application. I am truly surprised at how many spelling errors I see in these letters. I'm sure that the applications and possibly even the resumes are just as bad. One person sent out several apps and he obviously cut and pasted the cover letter with each app. Yes, he sent out the same errors to all potential employers.

You only get one chance to make a good first impression. By the way, this person has sent out many applications over the last few weeks. He, I'm guessing, isn't getting any bites. I wonder why.

I love it. In my past life I was a Security Guard, and one of the true pleasures I had was going through prospective employees applications and resumes. I even had a chance to go through some of the Stores applicants.... it was great. I don't know what was worse, the way they filled out the information, or the way they were dressed when they dropped it off. Don't even get me started on the interview proccess.

There is NO excuse for poor spelling. Those applications and resumes get circular filed REAL QUICK.

As for being dressed a certain way, now there is some room to move within that topic.

Dress for the position you are applying for. Go to the interview dressed for said position as well.

I know I have applied AND interviewed for a company while dressed in another companies 'uniform' (just happened to work out that way)

AUL, I interviewed for two of my three locating jobs wearing T-shirt and Jeans. It is acceptable to wear this since thats exactly what you would be wearing out in the field. I'm talking about the people who come in for the interview with a ripped and stained wife beater, Jeans that have holes at the knees and accross the A$$. If i'm interviewing you, and can tell the color of your underwear, your off the hiring list...... there is one exception to this rule.... hot chicks. I do have some leway in this rule.

I also Have no patience for Body Odor. I also have no patience for some key words. If you use the word "Irreguardless", I deduct points. I also deduct points for using the word "Dude". (wich I use frequently, but not in company of anyone who could fire me). If you use Curse words in an interview, I also deduct points. Cursing is fine out in the field, but not in the office.

Sorry to traill off on the subject, but pet peeves are pet peeves.

However, in all seriousness, and keeping the thread on track, I completely agree, nothing makes me cringe more than bad spelling. It frustrates me for some reason. The worst part is, I hate correcting people, so typically I don't. My supervisor was notorious for this in emails, but he was cool enough I just let it go.

The worst part of misspelled words being entered in a form online is that most browsers (i.e. Firefox) will let you know if you spelled a word wrong. Those red squiggles under the word are there for a reason...

I have learned to be less judgmental on spelling.
Some people have varying forms of dyslexia and no matter what they do the words do not come out right.
