Default So get taxed $3 per day?

Just found out today I'm getting taxed $3 every day I drive the truck. Because I'm not paid to drive to and from the 1st job it's considered personal use, yet I can't take a piss on the way home. On our paycheck they take out 3$ and then right under deduct 3$. Well I'm still paying some tax on it then. So do I get to count milage or what?

In WI. we could not....you get taxed on $3..so your tax would be about 15 to 20 cents a day when you drive your company truck!!!! that is state tax..and fed is something else...i was never told a number for fed tax rate...and i quit before it ever got settled.....it goes on your fed income so im guessing its 15 to 25%... so for every $3, you pay about $1 in tax aday..$3 is not your tax..its the amount the tax is based on..i hope that helps.....we in wi all asked many questions about it..good luck with your HR person!!!!

    Some general things.

It is a lot cheaper for gas, wear and tear and insurance for you to pay $3 a day than drive your own car. If they do not charge you for the personal use to and from home they have to report your use of the car as part of your income and you pay the money to the government as income tax.

For the company the unproductive time driving from the shop to the first job and from the last job back to the shop is eliminated boosting profits. For you this dead time is not on your production sheet and boosts your hourly production rate allowing you to rate a higher hourly pay rate.

So far a win win situation.

This way the company does not need to pay for a large enough parking lot to hold all the company vehicles plus parking for the employees vehicles, a big savings for many firms.

Now the question, are you REQUIRED to take the truck home? If you are required to take the truck home the truck, not to your company shop, becomes the workplace. I believe this means they cannot charge you a commute fee , or list as income, and would have to pay you from the time you got into the truck at your home in the morning until the time you got out at night when you returned home.

If you are doing on-call they should not deduct any fee for personal use if you are required to take the truck home with you so you can drive from home rather than the shop. This is to eliminate the extra response time it takes for you do drive to the shop each time a call comes in, otherwise you would not be able to get the jobs done within the response time limits.

As for not allowing you to take a stop on the way home or way into work that is not significantly off your route when you paid them for the use of the truck I need to research further.

I am not clear if you are paying a use fee or if you are paying taxes. You said "they take out 3$ and then right under deduct 3$. Well I'm still paying some tax on it then". This seems to say you pay them $3 for the use of the vehicle and then pay $3 in taxes for the use of the vehicle being taxable income.

There are some further items to mention on general vehicle use. If you stop for gas, car wash or even oil change on the way home the courts find this is a minimal use of your time connected with the use of the vehicle and you need not be paid wages for this. (Minimal use does not mean the shop takes an hour or two to get around changing your oil, in and out at a Jiffy Lube type of shop).

The company has the right to establish rules for the after hours use of the vehicle, a commonly accepted one is no non-company people in the vehicle.

Your question appears to be that you are paying the company for the use of the truck and they do not allow you to make any stops going home, including going to the bathroom.

While I have not found specific for this situation, paying for the use of the vehicle, I imagine if any company fired an employee for stopping to use the bathroom they would lose a lawsuit in court. After all it is acceptable for you to stop and gas the vehicle (even wash it or get an oil change) and they not pay you. That you are not permitted to stop and pee seems remarkably unreasonable considering they permit you to stop and gas the vehicle up.

a friend of mine that works there said they add $3.00 to your check do the taxes then they take out the $3.00 & no you do not have to take the truck home
& i do agree the week your on call you need your truck 24 - 7 so there should be no taxes that week
