    Default SM&P Video

So, I just got home around 2 and was messing around on youtube. For no reason whatsoever, I searched 'utility locating' and got this video...apologies if it's been posted. I just figured it'd be a good addition to have because sometimes I'll login and see guys posting on the welcome wagon, asking about the job and what it's like. This video would pretty much let anyone know what they are getting into...

I find it funny that they show the guy 'painting' the utility on the first time over. The rule is to first 'dot' in peak and paint in 'null'. Even in the video they show the double standards.

It is against SM&P procedure to "hot stick". plus you are supposed to take pics of your clamp or leads connected to the facility

    Whoah!!!

THAT'S a new one for me! When did that start?

I always agreed with taking pics of my locates. A hold over from my sat/com install days...but that's getting a bit ridiculas.

Glad I decided to tell USIC to SUC me! LOL!

SMP manhole procedure requires you to direct connect if at all possible - that pretty much eliminates the use of a Hot Stick if you follow locate procedure.

Oh no, I know that Spray, and agree with it. You can't truely decipher a MH without being IN it. The pic thing is what threw me. They seriously want you to snap a pic everytime you DC to a cable in a MH? Is this new thing just for MH's, all HP locates, or is it becoming standard for all locates?

Like I said before, taking clear pics of a completed locate I understood (took time but needed) but this is kinda over the top...

I think that you need to have a sit down with your supervisor and review the HP policy so that you understand what is expected and what the ramifications for not following can be.

It's called the "Quality Locate Process." Locators that are high-profile damage free for a certain amount of time get a pass on this procedure. I snap a shot of the open manhole any time I get into one anyway.

LOL, I appreciate the advice man, but I haven't been with SMP for almost 2 years. The concept of snapping pictures of DC/clamp in process of the locate just tickled the hell out of me.

I'm all for CYA, but that one is more of a "I can't look over your shoulder, so you have to do it for me" mentality. Sorry, it just grabbed my attention.

And I'm with you Wing in that I snapped a pic of the open MH lid with ventilator/pump set up. Just never snapped pics of each cable I clamped or DC'ed.

I do what wing does. If you have a certain damage ratio/prolonged damage free period, no pics required. I will not go out of my way to take extra pics. We had a guy here that was audited by a former VP and was termed immediately because in his pic; there was no gate, or ventilator. Plus his cord from his transmitter was going into the manhole. His truck was running (lights on) with the hood closed. He had no cones out, and was on a main road blocking a lane.

    Oops.

We are now required to take pics of both access points on every HP locate no matter how many years we are damage free on HP locates. Of course, most of us locate the utility, drive to the 2nd access point, hook-up, take a picture, then close out the ticket. They never said we have to actually verify our marks from the 2nd point. Just more political BS.
