    Default Relocating

With all the jobs USIC is listing is anyone looking to relocate and get a fresh start at another office?

I've thought about it but cant see myself making the move. I'd like to get in a much warmer location and somewhere where you dont have to worry about layoffs during the colder months. Also all my family is up here so if I'd move wont be any family close by.

Anyone out there looking to make a move?

If the only thing you are worried about is the winter lay-offs then that is when you should approach your office and ask if they need help down south.

If your talking a permanent move, consider it very carefully if your big on family. Being away sucks no matter how much money you are making.

I have advocated relocating to better yourself on this site but only if your situation is so bad you can't take it or you have been laid off and there are no other options.

Take it from a guy who has worked in NJ, Washington State, Florida, PA and Illinois. All while being from Up-State NY where MY family is located and now I'm working NYC/Long Island.

As AUL pointed out the first considerations are personal and family.

A lot of people prefer to work outside but find the northern winters just too much. That and winter layoffs or just outright being fired every winter.

Many southern locations offer housing at half the costs and sometime auto insurance rates are also much lower.

One argument against a locator moving south is "southern pay" but this also varies. The pay can be much less but sometimes only a dollar or two and hour less. Given the lower cost of living and fewer winter layoffs moving south can really be a raise even with a lower hourly rate.

I know one coworker who moved south and got $1.50 an hour less. But he got a two bedroom apartment at half the price of his one bedroom apartment and his auto insurance rates dropped thirty percent.

The real qustion for you is where you want to live.

Try this realty firm website, it will get you into the MLS of most areas of the US. http://www.kw.com/kw/
See what housing is like. Take a trip to the area you are interested in and spend a week to see if you find it likable.

If you were to transfer with USIC I believe you would keep your same rate of pay. We always need help in the DFW area and pretty much work all of the hours you could want year around.

You know, for a lot of people not having family in an area is a reason for moving to it.

I did a quick look and USIC has openings in Orlando, Jacksonville and St Augustine.

Now Orlando is two hours from both the east and west coast beaches. I do not think there is any swimming in Orlando that is not in a pool, too many gators. But there is Disney World if you have a Minnie Mouse fetish!

St Augustine and Jacksonville would probably be bad for you. The beaches are just a short drive and way too many young women in skimpy bathing suits. Those women would be nothing but trouble. Women on vacation tend to look for local guys to use and discard, this way their reputation does not follow them home. Plus being that close to major beaches would only have family members wanting to come visit.

Given the disadvantages the snow drifts, ice and frostbite look better and better.

I think you guys took this wrong way. Im not relocating just gave it a thought a while back. I just wondered who is giving it a thought or is actually relocating with all the technician jobs being posted. Was wondering their reasons and what is involved with making such a move. What there current office thinks of the move and so forth.

But thanks for all the info provided so far but Im not heading south.

Paint, the reason is as simple as it gets for relocating. MONEY and POSITION.

If your out of work, can't make ends meet, then what are your options?

My theory has always been I will go WHERE THE MONEY IS. I would rather be away from my loved ones for a while than broke.

Now the process of relocating isn't cheap at all and there is alot to it depending on where you plan on going.

    1. You HAVE to have the job (very important, that's why it's number 1)

    2. You HAVE to know a little about where you are going. Take Dallas/Ft. Worth for example (Spray can atest to this), there are like 38 to 40 smaller cities in the DFW MetroPlex area. Flower Mound, Plano, Irving, Grapevine etc. etc., the place is friggin HUGE. All with positives and negatives, different rents, different commute times. It's a big place to learn but some of the best strip clubs I have been to in the States.

    3. You have to either HAVE done research on apts. (craigslist is good for that) or ARE doing research while your living in a hotel and working.

    4. Money. For the moving truck rent and gas, first and last for the apt. (NYC/LI add security and 'broker' fee). Moving local is cheaper but moving out of state? Your looking at like $5,000 to be safe.

The point is everyone's reasons are different but rooted in the same driving factor, money. Just keep in mind those who move to 'change' usually stay the same personally and drag their problems right along with them to make their new place just like the old.

Women running a round in skimpy bathing suits and want a little vacation romp is a bad thing? My friend one of his guys went down south to help out (I think it was texas) and the guys laughed at what he was geting paid in Wisconsin. If you are worried about RIf in the winter there was a box you could check saying you were willing to travel. Usually it is for a few weeks and some you could take your dog. Granted this was sm&p and the purse strings were not as tight back then. Before relocting i would visit the place first. With the new pods storage units I am not sure the cost. Depending on how married you are to some of your belongins either have a moving sale and sell them or donate them and get new stuff when you get to where you are going. Store it in a self storage and pay a year on it up front and go see how you like it and if you like it come back load up and take it back down with you.
