    Gas explosion while company was repairing leak on a house in NJ ealier today

    "The house, which was empty and under renovation, was completely blown apart. The debris field covered a one-quarter mile area and houses on either side of the home were also significantly damaged"

    "injured 15 people, two critically, forced dozens of homes to be evacuated and closed local roads"

    That's pretty nasty....
    Anybody see the locators in there. One of them was brilliant enough not to have his hardhat on.

    that is just scary ....I am sure everyone was doing the best they could . But I really don't think those gas dept. guys take their job very serious . safety does not seem to be a big deal .

    Just watched a follow up story on it. Turns out the leak was outside the home and leached under the frozen ground into the basement. It filled up the basement and as soon as the furnace or water heater kicked on it exploded. That's more common than you might think. There's a utility worker in critical condition. They didn't say if there was any excavating or locates. Probably just an old line but anyone slinging yellow paint needs to be aware that taking shortcuts on natural gas or just going too fast can take out families or entire blocks. It's a sobering thought.

    This is why the gas co. in my area goes 200 ft. each way from the leak to pinch off the main.NOBODY is allowed inside that area til the readings go down.
