For those not familiar but Auto Eclipse is a device that shuts the screen off whenever the truck is in motion.

It is in hardwired and wireless versions. I have not seen the hard wired ones but I understand that you cannot remove the laptop from the truck unless you have a special key.

They are supposed to reduce driver at fault accidents and I suppose they do.

They also prevent the driver from glancing at the screen to read the notes or mapping software. So every time you have to refer to the laptop you have to stop the truck. Not a too bad an idea but I stop the truck anyway.

There are various options like shutting down the ignition if the seat belts are not fastened or the headlights are not on.
The headlight not on option is neat as there are some tunnels where headlights are required to be turned off.

Auto Eclipse is a great idea but way to easy to circumvent. If humans made it then it can be broken. Ive even heard that the website even says how to disable it.

Ive seen the wired up version but not the wireless.

I can't wait to work in an unfamiliar area, sort of like I do now, and not be able to to glance over at my mapping program to see where I need to go, thanks to Auto Eclipse.
My boots may be red but I'm no clown.

My Buddy's new truck is not equipped with Auto Eclipse but he said it came with a 3 ft long bicycle cable lock that he's still trying to figure out where/how to use. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

3ft long cable lock is to feed it through the steering wheel and door handle to lock the steering wheel in place while you are out locating or maybe if he parks close enough to a dip pole he can wrap it around the pole and feed it through the rim of the wheel.

or than that have no clue.

There is supposed to be a loop on the side of the portable desk. You tie the cable through the loop and the a stationary point on the same side as the loop in the cab, like a seat belt anchor. Supposed to keep the portable desk from being stolen or becoming a missle if you get into a wreck. The new strobe light set up and desk are so no unecessary holes are drilled in the truck for re-sale value.

Makes sense but he said his desk is already seat-belted.

The desk I was given could be held in place by the seat belt. But the laptop would on hard breaking, or an impact if one had occurred, go flying.

I finally got rid of the desk and put the laptop on the passenger seat. The laptop started overheating due to the air flow being restricted by the seat fabric. I solved this by putting one of the drain grids from a kitchen dish washing rack under the laptop.

pipehorn that occurs in other area as well...NC is no different. Eventually management will fall to the pressure and demand quantity and over look quality.

Here is a good one. One firm plans on keeping the GPS in the trucks but also putting a GPS on each locator so they can see exactly where they walked on the job site. This way they know the locator got out to the truck and walked the job site in the same places they made the marks. They also see that if they only walked for 10 minutes but were on the site 30 minutes they can fire them for not working the entire time. Mark two utilities joint buried in the trench but only walk it once, fired. Marked the site yesterday and all your paint intact but do not show you walked the entire site, fired.

Maybe we are in the wrong part of this business. Maybe we should earn commissions selling this crap.
