Default Maine company to lay 1,100 miles of optic cable

Maine company to lay 1,100 miles of optic cable

A new company is promising to lay 1,100 miles of fiber optic cable across Maine to help expand high speed Internet service to remote parts of the state.
Maine Fiber Co. will use $25.4 million in stimulus funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce to help build a high capacity rural broadband network.
Starting this spring Maine Fiber will begin installing the fiber optic cable for the Three Ring Binder project.
The project will provide broadband service within more than 100 rural Maine communities with 110,000 households, 600 community institutions, and 38 government facilities that are not served today.

5.8 million feet of cable. It will make a lot of work for locators depending on how much is underground. A lot of rural areas still are primarily feed from poles and it is a lot cheaper to string this on poles than to bury.

Still some jurisdictions have rules that make new utilities be underground. That is so here but not always. In areas where service from poles exist many new service drops from poles are allowed, it depends. For example if a house with a pole service gets an electrical heavy up requiring a larger service drop wire the new service must be buried.

I read a few years ago that Maine was the most illiterate state in the Union. Do you think enough of Maineites (?) will even know what all this fiber is for to make it worthwhile.

The small phone company I used to do locates for (under contract) had tons of fiber in the ground. They ran things great up there. They knew that they wouldn't be able to hook everyone up so when they ran a new F.O. cable, they also ran a new copper cable as well. So as they systematically went through their system, they upgraded their existing facilities, and made the new F.O. cables real easy to locate. If you got the copper, you got the F.O.

    Great place to locate for.

5.8 million isn't really a lot when you stop and think about it. FTTP alone does at least double that every year where I am, and that is on top of the core stuff. If a good portion of that is overhead (and I am guessing in Maine it would be) the overall impact might not be bad.
I seek not to know the answers, but to understand the questions.

I stated in my original post that it was 'several years ago'. However, considering the circumstances, I will completely understand it if you didn't know what that meant!
