Locatorjobs.com is a great site. Still not all employers list there, even ones that are registered with the site do not post all their jobs.

Consolidated Utility Services - Bradenton, FL

Base Pay: $12.00 - $16.00 /Hour
Other Pay: Piece Rate Compensation Plan Available
Employee Type: Full-Time
I believe Consolidated has more contracts in St. Petersburg and Tampa. Plus there is another firm north of St. Petersburg that has the Teco gas contract.
That town Bradenton is about 8 miles north of Sarasota.
I have family there and was in Saint Petersburg last January. I do not know how familiar you are with the area but housing may be more expensive near Sarasota. I know that in St. Petersburg you can get a efficiency or if you shop a one bedroom apartment for between $450 and $500 a month in a decent area.
To get to the Sarasota area from St. Pete you have to cross a toll bridge everyday.
The url / link below will get you into the MLS for that area so you can see houses for sale and rent. Gives you an idea of costs down there. Overall housing is reasonable so if $16 and hour seems too small take into account the cost of housing. A lot of people down there are thankful if they find a $10 an hour job.

Unemployment down there is terrible. I checked the St. Petersburg paper and they had only 12 jobs in the help wanted and half of them were for telemarketers. Most the jobs are advertised online these days. A good job search engine is simplyhired.com . A lot of retires down there and a huge demand for health care workers.
There are also a lot of retirees who no longer drive who sell off low mileage cars at great prices. So many old people that their estates sell off their cars. I was advised it was cheaper to buy a car down there rather than bring one in due to the registration fees for an out of state car. I do not think that is an option for most people.
If you are going down for an interview the cheapest airfare is from AirTran, I went round trip for about $190. Cheaper if you fly on the weekdays instead of weekends. Got my rental car from Thrifty Car Rental right there at the airport. Good prices. If you want a midsized car get their "Wild Car" deal. They guarantee that the car they have for you will be at least a midsized at $2 a day less than a midsized. They had a Dodge Caravan which rents for $87 a day and they charged me $38 a day.
You are in the wrong business. You should be a travel agent or a relocation agent.

I think someone is still looking for greener pastures.

There are also plenty of SUE firms down there as well. When I was there I sat down for an hour with the owner of one of the firms. He had no job openings but was glad to discuss the business.
In short the SUE firms for the most part down there are hurting badly. The ones that do well have a rating to work on DOT (whether he meant state or federal I did not ask) rating to work on their contracts did the best. Construction has reduced so much that there is little business to go around.
I do know that Florida Power and Light was setting up a GPR unit of their own. I believe over in Land O' Lakes which is just north of Tampa. Somehow I remember it as being southeast of Tampa or south of Orlando. Something you can check out.
He probably was happy at his job but was just looking to relocate for family reasons. We all know the economy has hurt Florida much more than it has NY.
Things are bad down there. I most of a news story on TV. They have so many people begging in the streets of Tampa that the city council felt they had to do something. So the passed an ordnance that the beggars had to wear safety vests like a construction worker, passed out these vests to all the homeless people. Now they are walking through traffic begging at car windows and people thought construction workers were begging money from them.
I was mostly in Saint Petersburg and there are beggars everywhere. Seems the cops chase them off in the town center and at the tourist spots but they are everywhere else.
