    Default Locating Terminology

    A buddy and I were talking about different terms used in the industry and I decided to make a list and invite 'Viners to contribute their own. ex;

    Toothless drop - refers to ATT sheathless drop - since it doesn't have a metal sheath it can't 'bite' you

    Murder Investigation =refers to damage investigation when a utility gets cut.

    Drive-by's = refers to aerial , or clear tickets, where no marking is required.
    I might not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was !

    Blow-by or Blow-through a ped = Locating a cable that goes in and out of a ped without hooking up at the ped. You are hooked up to another ped and you trust the signal will carry through.

    Soft contact.

    To make a soft contact on a tkt , is to make a call to the contractor, or just enter notes on it , without marking and billing the tkt.

    "Ghost" - false peak signal resulting from signal on target line capacitating to non-target line (or even piece of buried rebar) resulting in both lines producing EMF field which converge and peak at a given point BETWEEN two lines (where varies on depth and capacitance of each respective line). This gets even more fun when 3 or more lines get in the act.

    "straight-line" - practice of painting facilities from ped to ped by "connecting the dots" without actually applying a signal.

    "cable cum" - petroleum based substance used by phone companies as a water/moisture deterrent inside telecommunication cables, AKA- "icky-pik".

    Gotcha- a locator damage that shouldn't be a locator damage. I.E. service for next house swings 10 feet into next property, or goes a block before hitting a main.

    Leap frog = When inducing on a line, and the signal gets weak, its the process of moving your box up everytime your signal peters out. (not recomended for newbs)

    Cheater Clip= Aligator clip with small spike, used to clip onto phone cables, ground wires, and tracer wires so you don't have to strip the wire itself.

    Roll-Over-(insert name of Damage investigator)--- works for no matter what company you work for.

    F%#$ Magic- The reason utilities are in the field and not on the maps......... "it must be Effin Magic"
