    Default Locating Philosophy

    What's your locating philosophy?

    Here's mine:

As long as what you want isn't going to endager my job, or extemely unreasonable, I will do all I can to make it happen.

After all, how often does arguing improve things?

Most the time, you'll just end up having to do it anyway whether they need it or not. I say: "Show me what you need, and I try to make it happen."

Using this approach has greatly improved contractor relations, saved time, and reduced how PO'd I get by the end of the day.

    My $.02

    Good philosophy cipher.

I manage all my projects, with no help, and (most importantly) no DAMAGES, as well as remain productive, simply because my contractors love me. They know I'm there when and if they need me, because I honestly care about what I'm doing.

At the same time, MOST of them take the time to call me if they have any doubts about a locate, and actually STOP digging. I have a few I'm still training to trust me (mostly because of poor locators in their past), but for the most part they take care of me.

Not that I'd ever trust one enough to think they wouldn't throw me under a bus if $$$$$ was in play. LOL! Always CYA!
Character is what you are in the dark. It is the things you do, when nobody can see, and nobody will ever know, that define who you are as an individual.

BY GEORGE I THINK YOU GUYS GOT IT......It is that whole bees to honey thing......Bottom line never trust them to keep your back 100% because if you do then you are a fool but if you have a good report with your contractors then your life will become so much easier................

I do what I can, but I don't kill myself.

Call people. Communication is a key part of this job - I can't think of the number of times someone has called in blocks and blocks for work on one side of the road in a couple intersections. Document everything, raining/digging prior to locates, conversations/footage per day to contractors/ discrepencies in work description.

For being alone most of the day, this job is not for the antisocial.

I work with people if they are reasonable. Call in a few miles on one job and expect it to be done in two days and its not, and get mad? Tough luck. I'll go out of my way to help a contractor if they are working with us - and I give them all the benefit of the doubt until I realize they could care less.

    Its definitely a balance.
