    Default It just happened...

Our yearly project just started on Monday. This morning we had the electricians working in the same vaults we were accessing for hook ups and something happened (Details are still comming out, less then an hour ago) he took the majority of the current on a 5kv line.

There is something sombering about watching paramedics working on a kid you were just talking to. Unfortunately he didn't make it.

I know he wasn't a locator, but it is the same system we hook up to on a daily basis.

Just feeling, "oogie" and had to share with the brotherhood.

I'm right there with you MKE. I'd be a damn wreck if one of my guys or other company employees were killed on the job. I hope his family is take care of.

I'm sorry you had to see that Mke. I've had a similar experience. A cable plow operator that I had met several times on locates decided he didn't need to call locates in a huge corn field. Turns out there was a TransCanada interstate pipeline in that field. I was 20+ miles away and heard the explosion. The operator and his helper were killed and they barely found any remains to bury. It took a while for me to get over that but it made me a much better locator seeing the results a short cut or mismark can produce. Having something like that on my conscience is not something I would want to live with.

So here is the latest.... Don't know if it's good news or bad.

The kid was clinicly dead on scene, but paramedics were able to restore pulse. He is in an induced coma, they still don't know if he's going to survive. They don't know if he survives on how functional he will be. He lost an arm, vision, as well as hearing.

The kid was 26 with 3 kids.....

I don't know how many of you guys are familiar with Airfield Electrical, but It's not a normal electrical circut. There is no ground. There is no breaker. The Unshielded electrical cable looks like an extension cord. The system is designed to maintain the intensity of the lights on the airfield and because of that they typicaly operate at 2.4KV, if that system faults, it doesn't go to ground like a house circut. It keeps adding juice till the limiter in the main utility building gets past 5kv. Then the system will shut off.

When he got hit with the amps he colapsed and kept holding onto the cable untill a co-worker kicked the cable hard enough to dislodge it from his hands.

This is just me talking here, but if I lost an arm, my sight and my hearing, just kill me or let me die. F that.

    Mke,
Sorry doesnt begin to give honest dialogue to the situation - our thoughts are with you over hear at Seatac Airport - I am going to pass this on to the safety team. Our lighting circuits are similar at 5kv and we are under construction on the center runway....From speaking to electricians over the years I know the kid who grabbed that power line probably had no chance at letting go of it, when electricity is enduced into the body it seized up your muscles, if anything else it caused him to grab the cable harder. I desperately hope he pulls through.
