Its winter over here in Idaho. Ive been waking up to about 5 degrees everymorning for the last 2-3 weeks. Only today did it start warming up. The snow and ice are melting and it started raining this evening.

Here in the "Breadbasket of the World," we have been in a drought for the past 16 months. Consequently, we had no snow last winter and this winter seems to be the same. The temps here this winter favor Idaho (many days of below zero wind chills), but have experienced intermittent Yahoo weather. I love the Midwest winter weather! Five days of frozen butt cheeks and digits then two days of Spring that repeats its self during the winter months. The ticket counts here are down because we have very little backyard work. The project work stays with us all winter long.

Just to bring us back to reality, consider Oymyakon, Russia, known as the world’s coldest village which is home to around 500 people. It was -58°F there January 23, 2013 — but its school only shuts if it dips below -62°F. Cars are generally left running full time by locals who fear vehicles won't restart if turned off. Known as the 'Pole of Cold', the coldest ever temperature recorded in Oymyakon was -96°F!

A view of Stalin's 'Road of Bones', the route to Oymyakon, on a -58°F evening. The road runs for over 1,240 miles through the wildest terrain of the Asian continent, connecting Magadan and Yakutsk, and making an enormous loop through the Siberian mountains in order to reach the hundreds of gold mines that once operated there.

Forced labor was used to construct every inch of this incredible project – at first by inmates of labor camps, but later by the unfortunate denizens of the gulags that began springing up all over these near-uninhabitable provinces of Stalin’s Soviet empire. Many were Russian POW’s, banished to the region after being labelled German ‘collaborators’. Many were Russian Christians who refused to renounce their faith under the Communist regime.

Climatologists agree. We have entered a new ice age. On February 1st, there was freezing rain and then a hard freeze. A sheet of ice covered everything. Then a foot of snow fell on top of it. The groundhog was not able to burrow through the ice. His tunnel collapsed and he got stuck. They weren't able to locate his body. Puxatawny Phil did not survive. There will be no Spring.

I just heard my local Kansas City weather man announce a record high temperature for us today - 82°! Since October, 2014, Kansas City received a half inch or more of precipitation only three times. Meanwhile, Boston has officially set a new record for snowfall accumulation - 108.6"
