There are cases where a gas line was damaged and it took a while for the gas to leach out and find an ignition source. If it backflows into a basement and fills it with gas, a pilot light is all it would take. The house would go off BIG!! It's possible, especially if the home had electronic pilot lights. It could be hours before one kicks on. From what I've read, I guess plane crash has been ruled out. They talked about meth labs but that was an awfully big explosion (not that I know much about meth labs ). If some unlucky locator did a ticket in that area recently, I'll bet he's not sleeping well tonight. Let's hope that's not the case.

Sounds like a faulty furnace filled the basement up with gas.

Thankfully it wasn't a damaged service or main. Think about that though when you're marking gas. People don't always realize just how powerful natural gas can be in a confined space. One small short cut or error marking a simple 5/8 inch home service line can potentially take out an entire neighborhood.

I know of one or two that caused a lot of damage. i think it followed it way back through from around the service or sewer or water. It wound up destroying a church in one and the other I think was 9 homes. It happened in either rock island or blue island IL. When I get back in I might do some more searching on it. It was a very expensive "AT fault" damage.
