    Default Huuuuge Damage

The pictures below are a result of a guy using a post hole digger without calling for “locates” and he hit an underground cross country gas pipe.
This is what a high pressure gas main is capable of.

Did the person that caused the damage live through that?

It is very scary seeing pictures like this. We all mark out high pressure gas mains everyday. Seeing pictures like this really make you realize how important our jobs are.

Do they not put permanent signs along the pipeline ROW ? (not that a contractor/digger always look before they did anyhow..).

And.. I wonder why that 2nd, larger house bought it. Fire dept couldnt get there thru the flames and the 'grass fire' burned towards it ? It seems to be out of the flame direction, and far enough away from the pipes.
(May you live in interesting times)

Happened on September 14th in Appomattox, VA. It's a 30" pipe with .344 inch wall thickness. Pipe installed in 1955. A preliminary examination of the pipe indicated that metal loss anomalies were present in the vacinity of the rupture (corrosion). This info comes from PHMSA.

No mention of post-hole digger. Seems to be an internet rumor thing.

Our trainer sent this out to us a month or so ago. There was no mention of a post hole digger. I googled trying to figure out where the hell this happened, but came up empty handed. Thanks for clueing us in to the location.

OK a little more about this photo, it was taken in southern VA, the transmission line developed a corrosion problem and split open and the gas found it's way to a open flame near by and caught fine, if you look at the photo the pipe must be at least 12' deep , no post hole digger did this
