Citizen King - Better Days (And the Bottom Drops Out)

    ---------------------------------------------

In my shoes my toes are busted
My kitchen says my bread is molded
I got a good job at the dollar store.

    One foot in the hole
    One foot gettin' deeper
With a broken nail and a blown out speaker
And I ain't got much else to lose

    I'm faded, flat busted
    Been jaded, I've been dusted
I know that I've seen better days

    One foot in the hole
    One foot gettin' deeper
Crank it to eleven, blow another speaker
And I ain't got, I ain't got much to lose

    'Cause I've seen better days
I've been the star of many plays
    I've seen better days
    And the bottom drops out

    I've seen better days
I've been the star of many plays
    I've seen better days
    And the bottom drops out

Now, my cup's filled up with five buck wine
I find myself here all the time
    Another rip in the glass
    Another chip in my tooth

Rained on, I've been stained on
Found another goat I try to put the blame on
And now I'm steppin' on all the cracks
So I guess there ain't no use

    'Cause I've seen better days
I've been the star of many plays
    I've seen better days
    And the bottom drops out

    I've seen better days
I've been the star of many plays
    I've seen better days
    And the bottom drops out

    I'm bent like glass
    Second hand like glory
Missed the bus but I'm in no hurry
    Molasses fast, no business born

    One foot in the hole
    One foot gettin' deeper
Crank it to eleven, blow another speaker
And I ain't got, I ain't got much to lose

    I've seen better days
I've been the star of many plays
    I've seen better days
    And the bottom drops out

    I've seen better days
I've been the star of many plays
    I've seen better days
    I've seen better days

I know that I've seen better days
    (And the bottom drops out)
I've been the star of so many plays
    (And the bottom drops out)

I walked on the edge without a hold whole way
    (And the bottom drops out)
'Cause I know, I know that I've seen better, better days
    (And the bottom drops out)

    Roberta Flack
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (1969)

Roberta's first album did not sell well, until Clint Eastwood chose the song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," for the sound track of his directorial debut Play Misty for Me. It became the biggest hit of the year for 1972 - spending six consecutive weeks at #1 and earning Flack a million-selling gold disc. Eastwood, who paid $2,000 for the use of the song in the film, has remained a friend of Flack's ever since.

Everclear - I Will Buy You A New Life

Victoria Newman of the Young & the Restless
portraying Alexakis' "baby momma" Jenny Dodson

I hate those people who love to tell you
Money is the root of all that kills.
    They have never been poor.
They have never had the joy of a welfare Christmas.

Truer words never spoken - [Wingfoot]

'I Will Buy You a New Life' is a personal song written by lead singer Art Alexakis. Art has a daughter named Annabella Rose (born 1992), from his relationship with Jenny Dodson. When his daughter Anna was a baby, Art and Jenny would go to a wealthy neighborhood in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon. They would look at the fancy houses, drive around and fantasize about living there. One day, after the success of Everclear, Art bought one of those houses and moved into the neighborhood.

Alexakis comments on his song, 'I Will Buy You a New Life':

"It wasn't about the money. It was about a different kind of life; giving all of yourself to another person. It's the ultimate romantic song to me."
