Son allegedly shoots father

Independence, MO — Independence authorities are continuing the investigation into a Monday shooting on Woodland Avenue that left a man in serious condition.

The 51-year-old man was allegedly shot by his son, an 11-year-old, according to neighbors and several media reports.

Independence police took the juvenile into custody. It’s unknown if he has been charged.

Police have released few details about the shooting, and neither the boy nor victim has been identified.

City officials on Monday deemed the house “unsafe to occupy.” They posted notices on the door that claimed the inside of the house contained “feces/urine/raw sewage, extreme clutter and trash, extreme mold, holes in the walls, ceiling and floor, and open electrical splices.”

The ex-wife of the victim said she heard from a neighbor that the father made the 11-year-old shoot him.

The man’s ex-wife had been married to him for eight years. She lives down the street from the house.
