    Question Electronic Marking Wand...

    Has anyone heard of this?
I hear some major contract companies are planning to implement it.

I'm not sure this is a very good idea, locating in the field is more complicated than
    lines on a screen...

    Your thoughts?

Two things... One, big companies will grab these up to help document locates (I.e. screw locators).

Two, the accuracy would be +\- 14 meters or so and wouldn't do anything for protecting locators.

that accuracy seems it would be an issue. what happens when you do you sweep and dot out a couple things in your sweep and decide which is the best signal? If you dot it out first and return with lines does it confuse it? That thing looks heavier than my receiver.

Utiliquest has been trying fo9r a couple of years to adapt it to their software.

It is worse than useless and is expensive. As we know we sometimes have to dot things out and that is a problem with this as it records it as a mark. We also have to raise the wand over our heads and spray to clear the nozzle from time to time and it records that as a mark. There is of course the matter of accuracy. We also use the paint to spay into an area to show up spider webs and sometimes to clear out a swarm of gnats, bees , wasps, animals.

It's one of those things that is a bad idea but sounds like a great idea to the inexperienced that get made management.

The website and demonstration video does not cover that. In an area where we mark both TV and Phone how does the wand tell which 'orange' mark is TV and which is phone?

the Annapolis City Council in their wisdom, or lack thereof, granted two CATV companies franchise for the same area. So there you can be marking phone and two TV clients, three sets of orange marks but requiring three different designations.

Is there a prayer seeking God's protection from design engineers?
