dummy phone nids

I have personaly run across this a few times but I was wondering how often you guys see this. I guess the sercurity companies will put these on the house to fake out an intruder who wants to cut the line? Kinda smart or kinda dumb! Why not just hide it so they dont feel secure enough to actually break in? Or am I looking at it wrong?

Never seen one before. Either it's functional or the line is run directly into the house and you can't see it from the outside.

Sure it wasn't just something abandoned? Are they totally empty once you open them up?

I just googled and apparently there actually are dummy nids

per my research

Can't you just see a tel repair tech responding to a call and not recognizing the dummy! Then a locator showing up and trying to lacate the drop!!

Wait until they tie the dummy nid into the alarm system. Some tech or locator opens one and the alarm sends the police.

If these dummy nids become more common the we would need to add a lineman's telephone hand set to inventory so the lines can be checked for live.

I have only found two of these in my area. The only way I knew they where fake, is because the had no ground wire. They where is a fairly younger subdivison, and ATT now requires all their install tech to ground these boxes. I got out my personal lineman's phone and checked for dial tone. As I was checking for dial tone, the homeowner came out and told me what it was and not to hook up to it.

I guess if you can find it , you would go to the originating point of the ground lead

I see these things all the time, you can tell it isn't a phone NID as soon as you open it since it doesn't have the phone hook up lugs you normally see, here they usually mount it right next to the actual phone NID.

Since the phone company usually owns the nid burying it would not be a viable option. What I have seen is the nid moved to the inside of the house by the phone company when the customer is willing to pay to have it moved.

This sounds stupid, but why don't they just get the Cellular option for their alarm system? that way even if they cut the phone wire it does nothing to the alarm? To me its just another gadget to sell to rich people to keep the poor people out of their house

i've only seen a few of these in older houses. one house the real one was right next to the fake. At another the real one was inside and it had the drop and ground wire coming out of the brick wall, i just unhooked the ground from the joint grounding rod and clamped around the drop. any new house i go to they don't want to add more lines so they go with the cellular option.

They do it all the time where I am. They sometimes even abandon the old drop and run a new one to the house. In some cases, you can't open the old NID and tell it is abandoned; they leave it looking like it is active and terminate it on the inside of the house. I have not run across them burying a NID, but they will move it inside the house or garage area, or they will mount it in the crawl space. Run it from the ped to the house, clipped to the drop on the terminal posts and it's not a problem.
