APWA is the same here - you have locating companies that locate multiple utilities so they carry all colors when locating. I would like to believe that either the reporter got the story mixed up, or the tech's stick was already loaded with orange and had not changed it yet for gas.

I'm more concerned about the statement that the locator didn't need to access the gas meter to locate the site - where do they think the tracer wire is?
Job Applicant: What does this job pay?
Employer: I'm going to pay you just what you are worth!
Job Applicant: I don't think I can work for that......

Obviously, the reporter never located before, or they graduated from USIC1's school of drop the box and go!
I seek not to know the answers, but to understand the questions.

It may just be that the reporter is following their journalistic guidelines. Get the story and go. Don't worry about facts.

We can't get all wrapped up in making a perfectly dramatic story boring by adding facts! That won't sell any papers or get us the Neilson ratings.
