I was looking into switching from cable TV, but I'm reading that I have to install 2 dishes. One for mainstream programming, and a secondary for less popular networks like, say, Animal Planet. Anyone heard of this?

I believe one gets all the cable channels like animal planet and TLC etc. and the second dish gets your local stations. There are two satellites up there.

I have Direct TV and I get all of the channels, Animal Planet, movie channels, sports package, local channels and all on one dish. Never heard of having to have 2.
I seek not to know the answers, but to understand the questions.

Get Dish Network.

hey Mark, you might need two seperate antenna if you are going to get the new DVR wher you can watch and record programing at the same time. You still only have one dish, it just has two antenna's inside the dish. As for the programming it won't matter if you have a single or a double.
And I recomend Dishnetwork as well.

Thanks for the info, guys. This pic shows what I'm talking about...

I've got Directv. I love it and it only takes 1 dish to get it all. I have an HD DVR, SD DVR, and 1 standard receiver running off one dish and it could hold more if I wanted it in other rooms. They run 2 lines to each DVR. That way you can watch 1 thing while another records or record 2 shows at once. You also can watch a show you already have recorded while the DVR records 2 at once. The other poster was correct about there being several satellites floating around up there but 1 dish gets it all. It's called the Slimline dish. It is kind of of oval shaped instead of round.
you guys are funny .. lol. iwas an installer for 5 years for direc tv lol ..
no now a days direc tv tries to only install one dish .. being in wisconsin i belive they elimanted the need for the second dish . now its probablly going to be the ka.ku dish . its like two small ones wellded togother .lol .. go direc tv its way better than dish . more user friedly and better eq i belive . once u get the dvr youll never go back to cable .. lol
