If it's works any better than my sprinkler system, I'm thinking I'd start up a utility sprinkler head like device repair and maintenance operation. The real question is who's gonna do the locate when I call in a "repair utility sprinkler head like device" locate request.

To add what poker has stated. It could be 6 months before something gets on the print. Until the engineer has signed off on it a recent install stays off of the print. AT&T has put cables on the print that are proposed and not even in the ground yet. With the print only being a guide how many times have we come across a main or fiber or cable on the wrong side of the road from what the print says. what we mark it to fluid and too many cooks(utilities) All would have to agree on one software and some are lax in the efforts to get prints updated in a reasonable time frame.

Lets advance that idea way way way into the future. A contractor is going to dig so they call in a request. The utility company then activates the contractors GPS utility identification beacon for the area to be excavated. Now, the contractor shows up at the dig area with the beacon, the beacon now authorizes the laser equipped satellite to "paint" the utility. The contractor now sees the utilities highlighted on the ground by the satellite laser similar to what you might see at a concert or laser light show. When the contractor has completed the job and removes the beacon from the area, the satellite shuts down the laser.

That is the future of utility locating.
