    Default Co- "worker"....

So, we are kinda slow right now. Yesterday we only had 4 tickets between two locators. 3 were sign locates for the same intersection, and one was a street crossing for the cable company. Thats it.

Untill I recieved a call from our on-going projects, I took 4 additional locate requests, 1) Inside of tunnel 2) 3000' fence locate 3) Catch Basin install in conjested area. 4) Locate Air line for compaction testing (300' long W/tracer)

I proceeded to call my "co-Worker" and asked if he could pick up the Air line locate. He told me he was already heading in the opposite direction. I told him this was a higher priority then the 3 sign locates. He proceeded to tell me that he was already heading in the opposite direction, and he planned on eating lunch out in the area of the sign installs and he couldn't do the air line locate "any time soon"

I don't ask for much. All I want is to work with someone who has the same pride in their work that I do.

We have a great job. I feel one of the best in the industry. We are respected by the construction side of the company as well as the Engineering side of the company. When it comes to Utilities we are supposed to be the "go to" guys.

What in the Hell am I supposed to do with a co-worker who's more interested in getting out of work then doing work?

Do I let my boss know? Do I let him slide and hope he bursts into flames?

I'll follow that up with anyone willing to move to the Pacific Northest and paint in the rain?

Yahoo, that's not lost on me, thats why I keep my Mouth shut. I speak out alot more here then I do at my job. Any attention is bad attention. I try to be as flexible as possible. Thankfully i'm a easy go lucky guy.

those are genaric responses, but I know of a couple of other locators that would of put a boot up his arse.... thats not an option.

Well, I've used this technique, see if it can apply...

Scenario that you just described occurs again. Instead of calling him, you call your immediate higher-up and ask if they could try getting ahold of said co-"worker" since you are having trouble "reaching" him. (Not really an "untruth" since you ARE having problems communicating obviously). Let him (boss) know the situation and that you needed the other locator to run on the higher priority request...could he please try to get in touch with co-"worker" for you?...

This solves 2 things, it takes it out of your hands AND it gives co-"worker" the opportunity to hang himself. If co-"worker" tries the same stunt with boss, boss sees a problem and hopefully addresses it in some form. If he does as boss asks (what needs to be done) it's no longer a problem and the work gets done as needed. Do this kind of thing subtly and often enough, either the guy will get tired of the "boss calls" and just do it on his own, OR he won't and the boss will see the issue first-hand...and address it accordingly.

Ideally the guy hangs himself. But even if he doesn't...at least the work is done right and you aren't left screwed.
