Mandatory weekday OT plus mandatory weekend work. Plus employers will not / cannot grant leave time in the amount needed.
To get more locators to attend they need to hold it other than dig season.

My take is this is intentional to keep locators out.
Mostly the only locators that can go are selected / screened by their employers. This is to bring in the tame locators and keep the wild ones out.

The Locate Rodeo is not for locators.

The Locate Rodeo is not for locators.
    Pro, your comments are well-received and mostly spot on...The rodeo IS for Locators, but you are correct in that the timing of the event is impractical for broad participation. Over the years there have been a number of discussions about moving the event out of dig season and this issue of reconsidered every year. There are a few factors that so far, have prevented a change of timing and geographic location;

    1. Georgia 811 has always been the primary sponsor of the event and they have done a wonderful job.
    2. The event is held on college campuses where there are a number of varied utility facilities and the space to put on the event. Keep in mind that there are three event sites for each category (water, power, telecom & gas) plus the Locate From Hell event, so 13 event sites, plus areas to sequester contestants away from the competition sites until their turn to compete, plus security, fire / EMS services and a venue for feeding everyone lunch, no small feat when you have 300 - 400 people involved. College campuses offer relatively easy access to all these items, and summer time is when the campuses are most empty / least busy and can more easily host this type of event.
    3. The event organizers (Mostly GA 811) spend months scouting the venue for competition sites where they can focus on a specific utility, setup the "wheel", a judge's table, a scoring table and a sequestering site (times 13 sites). Then they spend a few weeks setting the wheel and locating the target facility with multiple pieces of equipment until they get a very tight consensus location and measurements on the wheel to formulate the basis for scoring.
    4. Besides the competition venue, the rodeo also includes locating seminars, training, an exhibition hall, an awards ceremony and banquet and must be held at a hotel with the capacity to house all the competitors, volunteers, equipment suppliers and family members that often travel with the others for this event.

Now, imagine trying to do all of that in the winter...with potential snow on the ground (depending on venue location). Now it may be clearer why the event is held when and where it is...not perfect, but circumstantially necessary.

so.... Other then it being sponsered by Georgia 811...

We typically don't get any snow here. I work for a company who is one of the largest property owners in the state. We own and operate most of the major utilities that would be covered through any locate. We not only have facilities that can house 400+ we have multiple hotels with free shuttle service to our facility (we own an airport). We also have public transportation all over the place. We even have Vac-trucks to pothole and accurately survey utilities for scoring purposes.

I know it won't go anywhere, but i figured I would toss that out there.

Mke I also have a college campus on 600 acres a airport on 800 acres< we don't have a shuttle but buses are fairly cheap. I live as close as you can get to the center of the country. We do get snow but not til nov. I am sure my city would love to have 4-500 people visit for the weekend.

Well MKE...you must be with SeaTac...

I like the idea, if it is SeaTac there is certainly enough flights, hotels and apparently property / venue.

Can you make it happen? I think there is room for a bi-coastal event, especially if it could be scheduled in the non-dig season...

I would volunteer to host the next rodeo at TheCableVine.com complex but lodging consists of a couch for the first arrival and the living room floor for all those that follow. The yard could accommodate a few tents. Tents would not need to be taken down during the day as all utilities are overhead. The Cable TV is the exception. The drop goes underground from the pole to the main building. The path it takes would need to be cleared. I should also mention that we have no airport. We need to get one since we seem to be the only ones without an airport. The street out front could not double as a runway since it is narrow and there are poles and trees and kids and cars that would be a real hazard for anyone trying to land.

    Just letting everyone know.

We know what you're up to. You're just trying to get a lock on the carry out pizza action.

Missed it by ...... That much.

No. 1 Portland International Airport, OR (PDX) - America's Best Airports | Travel + Leisure

No offense to the airport up north, but having done locates up there as well.... I'll take the one I work at.

GWJ_CAS, I would love to have a "Trans-Coastal" rodeo that would alternate coasts every other year. That way both sides of the US could participate. Realistically though, I know there are a crap load of hurdles to over come, one of which would be getting the Oregon Board to help sponser this event. That is where I think the headache lies.

I've tried to get Staking U to hold a training seminar here at our Headquarters building and for 2 years i've recieved the run around. Last time I spoke to the people, it came down to they had 5 training sessions scheduled for this "Area" and didn't want to take away from the other scheduled events. 4 of those 5 are over 4 hours away at some resort near golf courses or casinos. The only one near me was still over 45min away just outside the metro area. I was offering the same thing as above and they didn't want to. So, I talked to OUNC to see if they would sponser it or at least give their blessing and they were not interested.

    So here i sit...

I'm thinking it will just be better to attend the festivities at TheCableVine.com complex.... They may not have a full size airport, but rumor has it they have a drone and an elderly neighbor that likes to sunbathe topless

Agreed Mke. Everyone bring their equipment and a case of orange. We will correctly locate and mark every damned cable line in his area so he will be on easy street the rest of the summer.
