Hey Nb22x - I agree with Steve - Great pics! Please post more!

Picture #1 below - I do not see a ladder inside the manhole. It must be a shallow vault. When I worked in the Metro squad in the oldest section of my city, I ran into many shallow underground vaults. Some of my manhole covers there had collars built up in bricks.

When I was being taught to locate out of a manhole, it was taboo to use a "hot stick" (I'm not going to admit I have two in my truck now........). Manholes are notorious to have lateral cables/fibers entering the vaults that may or may not be on prints. There is no way to adequately locate out of a manhole unless a trip is made into the interior of the vault to see what is there. I strongly urge you not to use a hot stick unless you are 100% sure there are no laterals running out of the manhole and you are 100% sure it is a single-stack duct run in-and-out.

Even now, many times during the nice weather days I will climb down a manhole ladder with water inches from my butt crack to inspect every aspect of the vault because I was taught to leave nothing to chance (i.e. luck). Some days I feel like a big, fat Q-Tip by rubbing up and down those dirty manhole collars........ just sayin'.

Picture #2 - That is major damage to a very large telephone cable. My guess is it is a 900-pair, maybe as large as an 1200-pair. As bad as that cable is mangled, my bet is that the water department did not know it was there. I'd say it is either an un-marked live cable or an un-marked abandoned cable........ just sayin'.

This is the kind of locator I use. Accurate within a few inches and I only need to calibrate it once a year. Going on 15 years using digitrak locating systems.

Digitrak Eclipse. $8K for this unit back in the day.
