    field-repair.jpg

I had to do a minor field repair. The heel had came loose and i caught it on a fence i was climbing over. It ripped most of the sole from the bottom of the boot. I wasn't carry a spare pair of boots on me that day i had taken all my spare stuff out of my kia to shuttle extra paint around.

Greetings UULC! These pictures reflect the very first time I have ever seen a sewer install/repair where the workers have used shoring. Twice, in the last 15 years in a Kansas City suburb, has a worker in a deep sewer install trench been crushed to death when the walls collapsed. The most recent collapse was last year when a worker was in a trench 17 feet deep without shoring when the walls caved:

This recovery was a three ring circus. There were scores of firemen from many fire districts on site; none having a clue how to extradite the poor soul on the bottom of the 17 foot deep trench. There was friction between department heads on site when the Kansas City Fire Department muscled command out of their jurisdiction.

The local water department sent a vac-truck on site to suck out the dirt that was in the trench. When that didn't work, the vac-truck guys (guys I've known for years) suggested using the back-hoe that was right there to cut a trench next to the trapped worker. Without allowing my buddies to explain the technique, the KCFD leaders told my buddies to, "Load up your shit and get out!" It took over 24 hours for these first-responders to get the victim out by removing the dirt one small bucket at a time using screwdrivers! Tsk! Tsk!

My vac-truck buddies said if they are ever caught deep in a trench, the last people they want to respond is the fire department. Just call a back-hoe operator who actually knows how to cut a trench to get them out.

Locators did not start using cameras until about 12 years ago.

I sure don't miss the thousand rolls of film rolling around on the floorboard. Rushing off to the one hour photo mat when a damage happened. Then trying to figure out which roll had the right pics on it..............

I was far enough back that US WEST / Qwest / Century Link required us to hand draw maps of the locate area. We had to leave a copy on site in little baggies to prevent them from getting wet and we had to include the copy with our paper locate request. They didn't want us to waste time drawing two seperate maps so they gave us Carbon paper to transfer our drawings onto the second sheet of paper.

    Great use of time.
