• Thief makes the connection

    Salina Journal

A transmitter box and tools were stolen Friday while an employee of a utility-locating firm was in the process of tracing phone lines west of Salina, said Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski.

Barbara Raccagno, who was working for USIC Co., of Wichita, had hooked a transmitter to phone lines in the 5900 block of West State Street Road between 12:50 and 1:30 p.m., Kochanowski said.

She drove a half mile north as she traced underground lines, when her receiver quit working, he said. She came back to the phone line junction box where she'd hooked up the transmitter in the vicinity of the Rolling Hill Zoo hay barn, and found that it and a blue nylon bag containing tools were missing, Kochanowski said.

The Dynatel transmitter and assorted hand tools are valued at $3,250.
