Six hundred Delmarva Power gas customers are without gas service in the city of New Castle after a contractor hit a natural gas line in the area of Washington Park.

The outage, which is expected to last until tomorrow, is occurring in the Washington Park, Castle Ridge and Deemer’s neighborhoods between 14th Street and the railroad crossing on Washington Avenue, said Delmarva spokesman Nicholas Morici.

Delmarva Power was alerted this morning the a third-party contractor had struck a Delmarva Power natural gas line and immediately dispatched emergency crews to repair the system.

Gas service to the area has been shut off while the repairs are being made, Morici said.

The company is utilizing all of its resources to minimize the duration of the outage and mitigate the incident to keep the public safe, he said.

Morici suggests that if customers noticed a strong natural gas odor, or other evidence of a gas leak, they should not enter their premises.

If they are in their homes and smell the odor of gas, leave immediately, he said.

Do not smoke, make a spark or flame, switch lights off or on or raise or lower the windows as a precaution, and call Delmarva’s emergency number from a safe place at 454-0317.
