    So, We did hire someone. They have quite a resume. Looking at it, it sounds great 10+ years locating. Winner of a regional locate rodeo. Snagged 3rd in the international rodeo.

    In the interview, he even brought in all of his certificates and such, along with the certifications of the rodeo's he has been in.

    I have had high hopes for hiring a locator with this much going for him. He's even told me that his past employer have offered him more money to come back ...

  2. Why not use the latest tools available to prevent these accidents

    It is still somewhat of a mystery why municipalities do not mandate markers that provide the vertical tolerance and horizontal tolerance. These accidents can easily be avoided which saves lives, injuries, and money. It is also a mystery why utility companies do not use the latest and most up-to-date tools available to prevent these costly damages.

    According to 2011 reports, of all accidents reported, 22% were due to poor locating practices, 41% excavation practices were not sufficient and 26% were due to the fact that no notification was made. More than a quarter of the field accidents are because people are NOT calling!


    While 26% of all accidents result from NOT calling an 811 call center, a full 74% of the accidents that happened resulted DESPITE notification being made.

    They don't do potholing, but they did claim to be private locators with GPR. I soon found out these guys are GPR guys who think they can locate.

    First off, they showed up in an RV. Not too shabby for a Locating rig. It was a two man crew. It seemed like the main guy was training the other guy, since there was a lot of basic commands given. I was there just to help with the understanding of the area. I wasn't supposed to locate.

    Ok, So we went through the hiring process. Found an acceptable canidate. Thought it was going to work out..... However......

    What in the Hell are people thinking?

    The guy did perfect in the interview. Blew the other two interviewees out of the water.


    Oh well.

    I honestly don't know how in the world employers deal with this.
