About 10 years ago I started in Louisiana, located there for about 3+ years. Took a 2 year break chasing the bigger bucks. Then returned to the busuness in the Ky. market. I have been there since.

The S.W. quadrant of the city I live in plus some of the rural areas.
The city is growing at a terrific pace so have tons of new projects on the go, new utilities being put in old ones taken out.
Locate 6 utilities in these areas.
Keeps me busy and out of trouble.
And, every day there is a new surprise (no snakes or gators) just new stuff in the ground that I have no prints for and nothing on the computer. So, lots of days I go on a seek and destroy OOPS, I mean seek and find mission.

I think it is industry wide on prints. They put them in faster than their computers can draw them. At least that is what they are telling us. I think it is the engineers who are lazy and don't care about the field workers who need them. Including their own employee's. You don't even have to have a degree let alone one in engineering to be one at ATT. Go figure.:bonk::Crash:

I gave been all over the United states, LA, TX, MS, Washington, Deleware. too many to mention. everyone of thise places I had to locate different things and each one was a new challenge. The neatest place I located was at Dover airforce base. We did a job where we had to locate and expose jet fuel lines. You knew you were on them when you started digging because of the smell. Also got to see pilots take off and land the presidents plane over and over. The people on the base said it was for them to keep their hours up to keep their pilot lic.

What's the cause of the growth? Cold winters keeping couples confined to bed & baby making? - Manufacturing growth? - Illegal alien invasion?

OIL MY FRIEND, TEXAS TEA as they say!!
We cannot produce enough to feed that growing economy below the 49th parallel. We have several mega billion dollar plants setting up in the northern part of Alberta to develop the "Tar Sands" which is strip mined. 85,000 square miles of it to mine. See the link for details.

I work here in the sunny South but have a question for those of you in colder climes. Do you only get to work part of the year? What do you do in the depths of winter? We have construction year round and I worry about those locaters in colder climes. Do you have to have a winter job too?

I work in Wisconsin and it gets bitter cold in the winter with 2-3 feet of frost. Our work slows down dramatically in the winter. There is still plenty of digging going on it just involves frost picks on the high hoes and directional boring. Our work force is cut in half from Dec. through March. Since I've been here there's never been any mandatory lay-offs. There are more than enough locators that volunteer for the time off in the winter. You get to collect unemployement and know you'll be back to work when you want.

I work in Alberta, Canada. In the winter we pretty much maintain a 50% crew the rest have either quit or been laid off. Our Summer staffing is about 50 ideally. But in three years I have only seen once where we were fully staffed for summer...and that was for a brief period. But I digress.
Winters here get no colder than North Eastern U.S. areas but generally we get substantially less snow and NO humidity. Average temp is about minus 20 Celcius. I think last winter we had a few colder days (-40C which is the same as -40F) but we had MANY more days that were above zero than we used to. That's the great part of global warming where I live, the winters are warmer.
Generally, I work half days and take quite a bit of time off to take courses, travel, eat/get fat, etc.
I have grown up here so from my perspective it is a heck of a lot warmer now than, say, in the 1970's.... :clapping: :woot: :yahoo:
