Well, did everyone make it back safely from the Rodeo?
Yes we did...One of our guys, Jim Driscoll, won Locate from Hell giving Metrotech their first Rodeo Equipment Manufacturers Challange (REMC) win in seven years.
Jim did the LFH with a Metrotech i5000, the same unit all our locators already use, and smoked the locate taking the win with a time of 1:17 with measurements less than 1" off.
Jim won $1000 from Locate Rodeo, $500 from Metrotech, a jacket and trophy. Jim had already won $1300 from Sunshine State One Call for our No Bull Locate Rodeo - Water Division.

10-4 gwj............can you tell me anything about the locate from hell????what was it like?????

The locate from hell is a 3 minute timed event. There are a bunch of different locators all set up with the ring clamps going down in a vault. You pick which piece of equiptment you want to use. You can't see what your hooked up to at all. The vault is covered with plywood. The LFH is pretty much seeing who cheats the best. You are normally trying to get multiple laterals or conduit runs with only being hooked up to one thing.
The 3 minutes goes by really quick. You have to locate it and measure within' this time limit.

The LFH was just one cable and if you studied the plat, it was real simple to figure out where to sweep. The time wasn't a problem for me, I finished it in 2:03. The measurements and leaving both my coins on the ground got me. I thought some of the other events in the telecom division were more of a headache.

Event 1 busted my balls. There was a MH in the street and for some reason I didnt see the open HH across the street until about 6 minutes in. Then, to cap it all off, I almost got hit by a frickin bus(not once but twice) trying to hustle and frisbee my Pipehorn box in front of the HH. Oh and to end the event, I said "I AM FINISHED" then dropped my coins in the box. Thats a 20 point infraction!!! I was pissed after that one!

A locator I know that works here in the Dallas area for SMP says he won 'Best of the Best' in the telecommunications Div using his trusty old RD 400!

That's still a good machine. As long as you don't snap the battery cover off, it's nice and powerful.

Brooks or Johnson?

Johnson won the telecom division. What made his victory somewhat remarkable was that on his first event his RD took a crap on him right as he started & he spent the first three minutes trying to get it going again, which it obviously did. Plus, I don't think he finished with the top score in any of the individual events but had enough altogether to take the cake. Props to Tom & SM&P for the win!!

It was Tom Johnson. Since this was his 2nd appearance another guy we both know was threatening to start calling him 'Jim Kelly' if he didn't win something this time. Anyway, he represented himself , SM&P :drinks:and the 'Corp' well. OOHwa!(or whatever those Jarheads say)

Congrates to all the winners. I'm happy to hear SM&P came home with a win.
Steve next year you should get some stickers and shirts made up and have a booth at the expo at the hotel. Word would spread really quick then.

Well I received my scores from my first ever Rodeo. Heres how I did. Locate From Hell 989 out of a possible 1000 14th place out of about 103 I think. Telecom Division 2931 out of 3000 10th place. Not bad I thought considering I used the only Pipehorn 800HL in the Telecom Division.
