PEMBROKE PINES
Construction workers punctured a gas pipe near Memorial Regional Hospital West this morning, causing authorities to evacuate a restaurant and reroute traffic in the area.
The leak was reported about 10:30 a.m., at a construction site on the southeast corner of University Drive and Pasadena Boulevard, just south of Sheridan Street, fire-rescue spokesman Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn Hallich said.
The workers hit a four-inch pipe.
Firefighters waiting for utility workers tried to keep the leaking gas from reaching a dangerous level.
An estimate of when the repair would be completed is not yet available.
"It'll be a while before they can patch it," Hallich said.
Traffic is being diverted in the area, which is just across the street from the hospital.
Firefighters opted not to close off the gas, because it may impact operations in the area, including the hospital, Hallich said.
The Fountain diner was evacuated, authorities said.
No word on whether or not it was properly marked, while follow up when I know.
