View Full Version : Paint then Flag or Paint and Flag?

Well I normally try to take all the flags I need with me when locating a single address ticket but sometimes it seems like it would be faster just marking out the lot and then flagging it all at once at the end. It seems like I either take way too many flags with or not enough and wind up going back to the truck anyway.

What does everyone else do?

I have three small pvc tubes taped to my paint gun. Carry red, orange, yellow flags with me generally.

I usually hook up, sweep to locate the power/phone, spray & flag at the same time. Do same for gas service & main. Usually find this goes quite quickly.

Depending on the ticket I paint then flag back unless tere is a lot of cables then I flag at the end

I like to mix it up and do a little bit of both throughout the day. You know, keep myself guessing.

Ya I agree.

What I really hate though is when I pop awake at 3 in the morning wondering if I did such and such on a locate.

Damn, I hate those senior moments!

That's what happens to veterans. This job tends to get a little redundant even though it shouldn't. We remark the same spots so many times you wonder if you remembered to get that one crossing.

Usually flag while I paint. I have large hands and long fingers:o. I'll only flag after I paint if it's joint.

It just seems to me lately that it's quicker to go back and flag at the end when it's an all joint subdivision. I guess I just keep switching it up lately because I get bored.

I have 2 paint sticks; each has a pvc tube taped to the shaft- one for electric, one for gas. When I was with SMP, I would stick flags under my arm for short locates, in my belt loop for loooong locates.

belt loop...........???? that is brilliant...i never gave that no thought... that would be alot easier than trying to carry them.....this is a good idea...

...in my belt loop for loooong locates.

WOW, I thought I was the only one who did that.

Everyone I know uses their beltloops. I bust my beltloops quite often. The beltloops go before the knees in my work jeans.

I've used my belt loop from the beginning, but it sucks when the flags
stick together.

Dracula and UULC:

Same problem here. I take the elastic off and bang the bundle about 6 good stiff hits on the door sill of my Ranger. Helps some.

I am sure though you guys probably already thought of that though!

I have ranted about this b/5 - there are flags being used by SMP in Oklahoma that do not stick together. Verizon is also using these flags. We tried to get these in Texas but were told they cost more. My solution - I beat the bundles against my bumper and throw however many stay stuck, sometimes 4-to 6 at some marks. :bang:

I'm all for a good rant here and there, but you guys are seriously complaining about flags sticking together?

When the flags stick together I just throw the ones sticking together. I know there are better things to complain about, but this is a sore spot with me. I would hold my taigate meeting and pull flags apart. I had some folks on the crew who would spend the time to pull 1000 flags apart. I have even left them on the hood to loosen them up. My bad, they just melted to the hood in the Florida heat and with the engine running and A/C on high.

I didn't think anything of it until I was introduced to flags that don't stick or melt together as they do here in Texas - by the way, it hit 100 today.[insert Sweaty Smilie here]
