We have an area in Alberta about 85,000 square miles where they are surface mining oil plus tons of conventional oil drilling.
Price at the pumps today? $5.28 for a U.S. gallon.
We are literally sitting on a sea of oil and asking the same question. Why the hell are we paying sooooo much for gas?

I am so glad we bring the company trucks home. Some of my buddies have to fill up their personal vehicles every other day. That would drive me crazy to spend that much on fuel.
Just wait we'll all be driving fuel cell vehicles for company trucks.

You are sooo right Golden. That (bringing truck home) really has to be one of the unsung benefits of the job. I really do save a ton of money not driving my SUV back and forth. I might fill up my SUV once every two weeks now.
Not sure how one would translate that to an "average" saving but I suppose it would be worth about .50 cents or more an hour. (because I do not have to buy the gas).

The Trans-Arabia Oil Pipeline to China (http://www.globalsecurity.org/)
When Bush finally steps down as President in 2009, he will have left behind the greatest legacy in the history of energy production. More important than the invention of nuclear power stations, he will have brought oil across the middle-east all the way to China. Americans may have thought that THEY were going to get all that Iraqi oil, but they are sorely mistaken. Iraq's oil is going where it is the most profitable: China.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff124/wingfootsmp/Trans-Arabia-Pipeline-To-China.jpg
Americans subsidize their gasoline prices with taxes to keep gasoline prices low (and thus keep transportation/food prices low and keep the American economy running smoothly).
The United States has the price of gasoline close to $3.90/gallon. The real price is closer to $5.50 if you ignore subsidies. The Chinese do not have taxes and there are no gas subsidies. In Hong Kong, China (http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/price.html) it is closer to $5.60/gallon and keeps going up. The gasoline price flows more naturally, and the demand in China is HUGE!
Lets say you have a million gallons of gasoline to sell. You could sell it in the United States and make maybe $5 million, or you could sell it in China and make $8 million.
Its a bit like a bidding war, and China is simply bidding a lot more.
As oil tycoons, Bush and Cheney both understand this. They can do the math.
The current cost of oil is $120/barrel (slightly higher in China due to demand). One 42 gallon barrel of oil when refined makes 19.4 gallons of gasoline.
http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff124/wingfootsmp/dieselbarrel.jpg
Thus after refining the oil into gasoline you now have 19.4 gallons of gasoline from each barrel worth almost $110. Add 8 gallons of low-sulfur diesel fuel and 4 gallons of jet fuel worth $65 combined. Still more revenue is available for the remaining 10+ gallons of refined product from each barrel of crude oil.
China currently uses 8.4 million barrels of oil per day and that statistic keeps growing. It is estimated to reach 20 million/day by 2010 (the Chinese have started buying cars like crazy) at which point it will actually pass the United States in oil usage and the price of oil by then will go up to $250/barrel and perhaps $8/gallon. That is only 2 years away.
By building a pipeline from Iraq all the way to China the UNOCAL Oil Company will be able to tap into the Chinese market and make literally billions of dollars/day.
Two years from now George W. Bush will be one of the richest men in the world.
The only remaining hurdle is to invade Iran and start building a pipeline across there too.

Interesting Dracula. I didn't think the percentage was that high. I am probably wrong but thought is was around 30% somewhere.
We are building mega billion dollar refineries/processing plants like crazy in Northern Alberta (Canada) in order to ship more oil south. About two weeks ago one company announced they are increasing their production by something like 1 million barrels to export to the U.S.
Last week, the Ambassador to the U.S. who resides in Ottawa (David Wilkins) announced that the U.S. MAY stop using our oil for U.S. government vehicles as the "processing" is a relatively high green house gas emitter. So my question to Mr. Wilkins is "It is better for the U.S. to buy oil from Venezuala or the middle east???"

No problem, just kinda caught me by surprise. Didn't think our exports were quite that high.
Although, I guess just about every mega development project has some U.S. involvement, so it would not be a total surprise to see a number like that I guess.

Hey nothing to do with gas for locating vehicles but found this article interesting. Was in our major newspaper last Saturday.
"The U.S. ailine industry is headed for a crash as record oil prices threaten to push several carriers into bankruptcy threatening 'our American Way of life' and industry study said Friday.
The industry 'is in full blown crisis and heading toward a catastrophe' said a study issued by AirlineForecasts and the Business Travel Coalition.
At current oil prices near $130 a barrel, several large and Small American Airlines will default on their obligationsto creditors late this year or early in 2009, the study says.
It shows that oil at $130 wil increase yearly airline costs by $30 Billion, while airlines will be able to generate only $4 Billion in fare increases and incremental fees.
The implication is that several large and small airlines will ultimately end up in bankruptcy, and of those, some will be forced to liquidate the study said.
The airlines are on pace to spend $30 Billion more on JET fuel in 2008 versus 2007, it said."
Okay, so if these folks are correct and they are not pulling a Chicken little scenario here, this could just be the tip of the iceberg in terms of large company failures. This of course has implications for each of us 'cause poop flows downhill!

Quick question! What side of your car is your gas cap? I drive several different vehicles, and at times can't remember one from another. Most recently I've had to fill up the gas on rental and borrowed cars. I've stuck my head out the window to see if the gas cap was on the left side or the right side, usually to no avail . . .
I have found if you look at your gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If the gas cap is on the left, the handle will be pointing to the left. If gas cap is on the right, the handle will be pointing to the right (see photo below). It's that simple!

Very useful on what side the gas cap is on a vehicle. 1 more thing lets not forget about terrorists. I would much rather pay $10 a gallon then have to worry if I was going to get blown up by a car bomb on my way to the grocery store or have me and my family jailed or executed because my hard headed wife refused to go out in public looking like a tent. Your next president could be banning pork and alcohol. Something to think about with the next election. Freedom is not free and the more we give back to the government the more its gonna cost when we finally wake up and say enough is enough. I myself am allready tired of working twice as hard to support someone that is to efing lazy to get up and get there own, but why should they when all they have to do is stand in line with their hands out. theone - Welcome Aboard! Thanks for the interaction. It's good to learn of at least one locator that is politically awake! This is the first step. There is so much more information you need to know and so little time left to find it.
You will never get the REAL story (the truth) from ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, Larry King Live, Glen Beck, Diane Saywer, Matt Lauer or Bill O'Lielly. Do not swallow all the politically correct propaganda from these BULLSHIT artists. Lou Dobbs is the only real mainstream news reader that gives balance to the bullshit. Keep searching the net for the truth. It's not that hard to find. And prepare yourself, and most importantly your family, for what's coming in the next few months.

oil prices fall in relation to the trading at the NYMEX and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Major Hedge Funds who were up to their necks in oil futures this summer had to bail on them when the larger forces i.e. stock's crashing forced their selling. They had to sell because the people who put there money in hedge funds began pulling their money out. So basically the price of oil is manipulated by a few multi-billion dollar hedge funds, and does not reflect the true cost of oil. What this means for "Joe Locator" is that in the near term 6-12 months, the price of gas will continue to fall towards 2.00. yippie!

Yes, some truth; to defray a portion of the costs of providing health services.
Some revenue goes to infrastructure improvements like roads, bridges, etc.
Some of the GST (goods and services tax of 5%) that is paid on gas also gets returned to the provincal government for assisting them with operating expenses as well.

A little cheating going on there though. My grocery store has one of those discount cards for sales and thing. So the money you spend shopping for groceries gets tallied up towards money of off gas (up to 20 gallons). Regular price was $2.13 so my $1.50 off made it $.63. Time to go grocery shopping.
